Title: William Vickers c 1823 Vauxhall/Lambeth
Post by: mike gordon on Thursday 08 February 18 19:51 GMT (UK)
Have come to a dead end with one ancestor/
William Vickers born c 1823 either Vauxhall/Lambeth/Wandsworth (he changes his mind in census, it may even be none of these)
I think married c 1851 Battersea.
Wife Eliza/Elizabeth born either Battersea or Collingbourne, Wiltshire. She also changes her mind.
Their children - Jane, Harriett, Ann, Julia (my grt gran), Amelia and George.
I have a possible mother for him as Susannah Vickers nee ?
Cannot find him in 1841, 1851 or 1861.
In 1871 he lived at 23 Ann Street, Battersea, Wandsworth.
In 1881 he lived at the same house but the street name changed to Linda Street.
In 1891 Eliza is a widow at the same address.
Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Mike

Is this your Julia please?

Births Dec 1865
Vickers    Julia        Wandsworth    1d   472

If so, MMN on the new GRO Index is COX.

Name:                 Mother's Maiden Surname:    Order:
VICKERS, JULIA       COX     Order
GRO Reference: 1865  D Quarter in WANDSWORTH  Volume 01D  Page 472

Wandsworth was the RD for Battersea.

Marriage a bit later than you thought if giggsycat has the right mother:

Lincoln    Eliza         Kensington    1a   57
Lincoln    John         Kensington    1a   57
Vickers    William    Kensington    1a   57

I've come up with an alternate theory.

there's a marriage in Lambeth in 1852 including William Francis Vickers and Eliza Jane Vass Goldsmith  [edited]

Q4 1853 Eliza Jane b Wandsworth mmn Goldsmith
Q1 1859 Harriet Sarah b Wandsworth mmn Goldsmith

Then in 1863 in Lambeth theres a marriage including Francis William Vickers and  Eliza Cox

First Vickers-Cox child is b 1864

Thanks guys but I don't think that's right one.
Because - Jane 1853, Harriett 1858, Ann 1865, Julia 1867, Amelia 1868 & George 1870.

The William Vickers given as a seaman, later became a wealthy ship owner. That's not my William.
I have now found a marriage - William Vickers & Elizabeth Collings 1852 Bermondsy but nothing else to tie them in.

Are you sure - seems a bit odd as he's a labourer in 1858

There's a death for Frances William Vickers b c1819 in Wandsworth, 1885

I note on Julia's baptism her father is William Francis

I think what has been posted is correct even though you are dismissing it:

Children in 1871 are Jane bc.1853, Harriett bc.1858, Anna bc.1865, Julie bc.1867, Amelia bc.1868 and George bc.1870.

The children beginning with Anna all shows in births index and GRO own index confirms their mothers maiden name was Cox:

Anna Maria Mar.1864 Wandsworth
Julia Dec.1865 Wandsworth
Amelia Mary Dec.1867 Wandsworth
George William Dec.1869 Wandsworth

With an 7 year gap between Harriet and Anna it indicates a second marriage for William which again, the GRO births index would seem to confirm:

Eliza Jane b.Dec.1853 Wandsworth
Harriet Sarah Mar.1859 Wandsworth - mmn for them both is Goldsmith!

So, the 2 marriages posted by Mabel Bagshawe, would appear to be the correct ones - with first wife Jane death jun.1862 Wandsworth - GRO index shows age 32 and this ties in with Jane Vass Goldsmith b./bp.1830 in Lambeth.

Looks like William and Jane had a son who died - Samuel William Vickers Mar.1857 mmn Goldsmith, died June 1857 Wandsworth.

All the children's baptisms are on Ancestry - first 3 (with Jane Vass Goldsmith) show father names as William Francis for Eliza Jane (24/11/1853 Lambeth), Francis William for Samuel William (17/5/1857 Battersea) and back to William Francis for Harriet Sarah (13/2/1858 Battersea).
He's William Francis for Anna Maria and Julia but plain William for Amelia Mary and George William.

Thanks everyone, it now works.
William Francis Vickers (1819 - 1885) first married Jane Goldsmith in 1852 & had two children - Eliza Jane & Harriet Sarah.
Jane died and he married Elizabeth Cox in 1863 & had four more children Jane, Julia, Amelia & George.
What confused was William & Francis are transposed as first names at times.
Also there is another Francis William who did become a Master Mariner and later a ship owner.
Still can't find him in 1851 or 1861 census tho. Appears as a lodger in 1841 if it's him.
