Title: TWAS- is their website working correctly
Post by: candleflame on Sunday 11 February 18 09:04 GMT (UK)
Hi all
Anyone who regularly uses the TWAS - Tyne and Wear Archives service website online catalogue, do you know if it's working or it's been out of action for a while? I tried to use it over a few days at different times and it said it couldn't be found. I got to the home webpage ok but as soon as I entered in any search term it said nothing found. I even tried the term 'Newcastle United' as the site used that as an example and I still got nothing.
I tried searching for others who'd had problems and couldn't find anything so thought I'd ask those of you who have used the site before.
Many thanks

The current site is hosted on the domain twarchives.org.uk

the link from there, to search the catalogue takes you to an old domain tyneandweararchives.org.uk

A look at WHOIS for the old domain shows it was due for renewal, not renewed and is suspended.

The council techy people will either have to pay for the old domain to be reactivated OR host the catalogue on the new domain and change the coding of the website to update the links to it.

Its broken, only the council techy folk can fix it. I'd highly doubt its high on their list of priorities

Thanks all.
I got the same as you Stan so actually that makes me feel better that it's not just me!
Boo your explanation explains that very well so that's very useful to know.
Thanks again all.

I've emailed the archives to enquire about the catalogue. The staff in the archives  will hopefully pass the query on to the techy folk and in the fullness of time they may fix it.

I post again if I get a response.

A lady at the archives kindly replied to my query today.

Unfortunately our online catalogue is unavailable at the moment due to technical difficulties. However we have been advised that it should be back online by the end of this week.

Our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

So looks like they are aware of it and the catalogue should be back soon.

Oooo excellent Boo and thanks for doing that.

Not a problem, it costs nothing to send an email and even if I don't get a reply, as Granda used to say Shy bairns get nowt :-) Once I can establish that a problem lies outside of my control I contact the people who 'do' have control and cross my fingers that a solution can be found:-)

Yes :-)

The catalogue appears to be back. A whois look up shows that the old domain was renewed on 14th Feb for 2 years so hopefully all should be well again.
