Title: Mobile calls over wifi
Post by: familydar on Sunday 11 February 18 20:39 GMT (UK)
Modern 3G smartphones are able to make use of wifi for calls and texts if mobile coverage is poor.  Everything I've read seems to require an app or at least a smartphone.  Has anyone found a way round it with a "granny phone" such as one of the Doro clamshell designs?  3G but not android.   I appreciate they're not a big seller but lots of elderly folk (and not so elderly) prefer a basic design with easily readable simple display.  And some of them live in mobile not-spots and have a habit of leaving the landline accidentally off the hook.  Is there some technical reason why wifi calling for non smartphones can't be done?

Jane :-)

As I understand it, you can only use wifi calling if your phone is capable of connecting to the internet, and I think it is only a smart phone that can do that. I connect through either WhatsApp or Skype. WhatsApp was great when my sister was in Canada, as I could speak to her for free.

Doro 3G phones have internet and email but you wouldn't want to use it as not touch screen and very difficult to navigate

Looking on line at WhatsApp, it doesn't look like it has a version that would work on the likes of Doro 6520 (clam shell type of phone).

I have an iPhone7 and wouldn't want anything else.  ;D ;D
