In 1881 Mary Helena Massey is with her grandparents Thomas and Rhoda at Main Street, Markfield
Leicestershire. Thomas was born in Markfield. So you need to work back from there to find a connection.

Mary Helena Massey was born born on 3rd October 1878, the illegitimate daughter of Eliza, and baptised on 19th February 1884 in Markfield as Mary Ellen. She appears on the 1891 census in Markfield, with her mother, then Gostelow. The Gostelows also appear on the 1901 census in Markfield but I can't find a marriage or any birth records for the children.
Mary married Joseph Cooper in 1896, also as Mary Ellen - no father's name.
Eliza Massey's brother, John, married Ann Tookey and their daughter, Constance Mary, married Thomas Brooks. Their son, also Thomas Brooks, born in 1909 in Ellistown, was the father of my wife's step-mother. Although not a blood relative, I have details on my tree.
The attached picture is of the young Thomas Brooks in Coalville. The elder man may be his father who died in 1914.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the information on the Gostelows. I noticed that Eliza seemed to marry Thomas Moore in 1879 but she appeared as Gostelow on the censuses.
My wife and I are not related to the Brooks or Massey family. I did some research for my wife's step-mother a few years ago but she is now 88 and very infirm.
She had no children but her brother, who lived in Groby for a time, had one daughter, although she also has no children.
Thomas Brooks and Constance Massey had a daughter, Constance Mary Ann, in Ellistown in 1904. I have not been able to trace any descendants.
Regards,
David
