Title: A Baptism for Thomas Hill, 1812, East Ham?
Post by: SamuelF992 on Tuesday 13 February 18 22:48 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

Wasn't sure if I should post this in the Essex section or London section. I'm trying to find a Baptism or birth record for Thomas Hill, born in or around 1812 in East Ham. He moved to Kendal some time before 1851 and was a schoolmaster. There is an 1841 census showing him living with an Edward Hill, born out of the county abt. 1775 that could well be his father. Have never been able to find anything further on Thomas' birth or family and not entirely sure where is best to look.

Best wishes
Samuel

There’s a Thomas hills born to William and Eleanor hills 20 Jan 1812 in East Ham on the Parish registers.

All the family trees on ancestry say Edward and Eleanor but it definitely says William on the Parish record.

However, there’s a james to Edward and Eleanor Hill in 1804, Mary 1807 and Maria 1809. The William must be just the clerk making a mistake, surely?

Oh brilliant! Maybe his name was Edward William Hill? Or just a mistake as you say. Thanks so much, can I ask what site you found it on?

Essex records online (SEAX). You can have all sorts of subscriptions from £10 for a day to about £85 for a year. You can save images of as many records as you like. There are some gaps in parish records but lots go back to 1700s and 1600s.

Thanks again. Would it be cheeky if I asked if you could have a quick look to see if there's a marriage for Edward and Eleanor? The ancestry trees I have seen give her name as Eleanor Penry.

On ancestry it says it's at Bromley. Do you have ancestry? You can see the image on there. It says they were both of the parish but that just means they lived there at the time of the marriage. It also says she was a widow.

Yes that's the one I saw and have down on my tree. Okay, I will get rooting around for Eleanor's real name then. Thanks again!

I had a quick search yesterday on ancestry but couldn't find anything. Might be with posting a link to this thread in the London board in case anyone can help. Bromley is in London.

Interestingly though, there is an Eleanor Barber born in 1774 in Epping, Essex, and one born in 1781 in Islington, neither of which are particularly far from Bromley-by-Bow.

I'll have a look at Epping to see if there's a marriage to a penry.

Edward and Eleanor did both mark on that marriage.
It might be possible that Eleanor's surname isn't quite right on the record (you get some odd ones sometimes)
The two witnesses were both regulars.
