Title: Moses Prangnell, Hampshire
Post by: LindaN on Thursday 15 February 18 02:01 GMT (UK)
I have had a brick wall at my ancestor Moses Prangnell for some time now and am hoping someone may be able to help please.

From the 1841 census I think he was born around 1793 but the page is very faded so its hard to be sure.

He married Hannah Wilton 14 Jun 1812 and the witnesses were Sarah Prangnell and Moses Wilton but I'm not sure how Sarah is connected but I think Moses is Hannah's brother.

Moses Prangnell is in the 1841 census in East Dean, Hampshire with his wife and I think 6 children. As I said it is very faded and hard to read a lot of it. I couldn't find him originally by the index and had to search through the East Dean census.

In all I have found 8 children.

His wife is a widow by the 1851 census and I have found a possible death record dated 1848 in Romsey but its just the index so its hard to tell if its the correct person.

I am hoping someone may be able to help me track down his birth, death, parents etc. Also how Sarah Prangnell is connected (sister, mother?) Thank you.

Thanks for your help Trish. I had wondered if that death record was his. I have just had a GRO pdf order in for a bunch of birth and death certificates but hadn't got around to ordering this one yet. It nice being able to get the pdfs cheaper but they still add up so can only get a few at a time. I'm still waiting on a marriage certificate to be delivered.

Moses Prangnell m Hannah Wilton 14 June 1812 at Lockerley

Possible baptism for Hannah?
Hannah Wilton daughter of William & Mary Wilton bapt 27 Sept 1795 at Michelmersh

Unfortunately I can't see any siblings for Hannah.  :(

Moses is being elusive.  I know he said he was born in county in 1841, but I can't find a baptism for him  :(

Thanks Little Nell. That was the Baptism I thought was most likely. My Uncle has done a fair bit of research and he thought the Mothers maiden name was MITCHELL. There is a marriage dated 3 Jan 1795 in Michelmersh between Mary MITCHELL and William WILTON that looks likely.

It was my Uncle that found Moses who was apparently born about 1791 in Awbridge but I haven't been able to back that up with my own records yet.

A Moses PRAGNELL [sic] married a Sarah COOPER in West Dean on 7 Aug 1794, both of this parish, and a Sarah PRAGNELL daughter of Moses and Sarah née COOPER was baptised there on 29 Jun 1795, aged 3 days.  West Dean is immediately over the Wiltshire border, about 2 miles from Lockerley and 5 miles from Michelmersh.  I can't find any record of other children of Moses and Sarah in West Dean.  This may be explained by a Moses PRANGNEL [sic] who was buried in Whiteparish on 18 Jan 1795.  If so, Sarah was his posthumous child, but there was more than one Moses PRAGNELL and it seems more likely that the man who died was someone else.  Back in Hampshire, a Moses and Sarah have ten children baptised in West Tytherley between 1798 and 1823.  I'm inclined to believe this is the couple who married in West Dean as the dates fit and I can't find a suitable baptism in Hampshire.  They appear on the 1841 census for West Tytherley, both aged 65-69.  There are burials there for a Moses on 9 Nov 1844, aged 73 (so born 1770-71) and a Sarah on 5 Feb 1848, aged 75 (so born 1772-73).  I suspect Moses is the son of John PAGNELL baptised in West Tytherley on 10 Jan 1773.  Possibly your Moses is the eldest son of this Moses and Sarah, as it's slightly unusual for there not to be a son named after the father, and the dates fit reasonably well.  The Sarah who witnessed your Moses's marriage to Hannah WILTON could be either his mother or sister.

Poking my nose in on this, I have PRAGNELL's in my tree but have not really researched that line myself although the furthest back info I have is for Moses Pragnell being married to a Sarah Cooper.
He was born in 1773 and she in 1775.

They had three children James 1817, Harriett 1825 and George 1823.

As I said, I have not really researched them yet, I was merely looking through census etc.

Would any of these name match?

James married Jane KIMBER (1818) West Tytherley, marriage 12th April 1836.
