Title: Facebook notifications driving me mad.
Post by: LizzieW on Thursday 15 February 18 18:49 GMT (UK)
Notifications on Facebook are turned off yet nearly everyday I get a "New friend suggestion", most of them are people I've never heard of.  The odd thing is I'm only getting these suggestions sent to me on my mobile 'phone, they're not popping up on my laptop.  How can I stop these irritating messages?

Have you got Fluff Busting Purity installed? That allows you to filter FB as you want. I've used it for several years.

I have "you have 3 friend requests" emails on a regular basis.
They are NOT from facebook though, the email address has a funny slant on the 'i',  so its a phishing attempt.

When FaceBook "Suggest" a page to me, I always, without fail, report it for "inappropriate sexual content".

I do not filter - they all get reported. And then I click on the "Block Page" button.

A week ago last Monday was an all time high, 55 pages reported, but it seems to have worked because I have had no further Suggested pages.

Chas

Thank you.

Facebook is not sending text though, just notifications if that makes sense.  The 'phone makes the sound of an text coming but I can't click on it and open it, nor does it show up anywhere. Once it's appeared and I open my 'phone, it disappears again after I've had time to see what it says, so I can't report it to anyone.

It only happens on my 'phone, not on my laptop.  I looked to see if I had Facebook installed but I haven't and in any case I don't open anything on my 'phone unless I know who has sent it - ie a family member.

groom - I'm not sure Fluff Busting Purity would help but I'll try it.

At least my query shows I'm not alone in having this problem.

I always used to do that and they would stop for a while and then start again.  However, the other month they removed the option for me to do that and I just got "no options available". :-\  It has though appeared again so back to doing that.  I wouldn't mind if they didn't put them in the timeline but just up the side of it as used to happen, you could just ignore them a lot easier.  I know they have to make money as its free to use but as most are totally irrelevant it gets irritating. ::)

I got two more notifications yesterday and one today, however, one was about a post one of my sons had made and the one today advised me that my youngest son had updated his profile.  They are not texts or emails, although they come from m.facebook.com which seems to be a message page but is part of Facebook.  If you just type m.facebook.com into your search engine you'll see what I mean, I didn't click on the message/notification itself.

Apparently the only way I can stop these notifications coming to my phone is if I go to Apps, then the Facebook app and click on Notifications.  The only problem is I don't have a Facebook app on my 'phone, so how are these messages coming to me?  When I looked at the Facebook page regarding notifications it just states that you can't turn them off but you can just select which notifications you want to get, and although I can click on PC and emails, I can't click on mobile 'phone as it's not highlighted.  >:(

Have you tried the suggestion from Facebook's help:

You don't need a mobile or App to stop the notifications. Access your Facebook account by your usual method and go through settings, although at some point in the past you may have accidentally agreed to text messages but this can be turned off by the methods outlined above.

Falkryn - the problem is they are not text messages.  They are just notifications that pop up, if I swipe right to get rid of them - they just seem to disappear, whereas if I've say got a map up and swipe right, there is an icon on the 'phone I can click on which shows all the stuff I've deleted in that way, but these messages are not there.  They're not in with any texts I've received.

Also despite the link you gave me and links from Facebook itself, when I click on icon in the top right hand corner of the Facebook page, there isn't anything called Settings.  I can get to Settings a different way but this is what I get regarding mobile 'phone. (see below)  If I click on Learn More, I get a similar page to the one you gave the link for - but it doesn't work.

Apparently what I'm complaining about are called Push Notifications - well I wish they would just push off.  It's annoying that they use the same sound as I've got programmed for text messages.  Every time my 'phone bleeps my OH brings the 'phone to me because he thinks I've got an important message!

You should be able to turn the notifications off from the settings on your phone I think. If I go to settings and notifications on my iPhone, I have the option to turn off what I don’t want. The other option is to try and change the sound so it isn’t the same as the text message.

You can turn off push notifications using your phone's settings

How do I adjust my mobile push notifications from Facebook?

Mobile push notifications are updates that appear when you're not actively using Facebook. You can adjust these notifications from your Android, iPhone or iPad settings:
iOS
To adjust your mobile push notifications on your iPhone or iPad:

    Tap
    Tap Notifications > Facebook
Tap Allow Notifications to turn on notifications from Facebook. Tap Allow Notifications to turn off notifications from Facebook.

Android
To adjust your mobile push notifications on your Android device (OS 6.0+):

    Go to your device settings.
Tap Applications > Application manager > Facebook > Notifications.
Turn on or off notifications from Facebook.

To adjust your mobile push notifications in your Facebook settings:

    Tap
    Tap Notification Settings
From here, tap to adjust how you get notifications and what you get notified about

Groom - I turned off notifications on my 'phone then sent a text from my OH's 'phone and, of course, no bleep (or Zebedee boing as my OH call's my alert), so that's no good, I won't know when I do receive a genuine text.

Falkryn -  As per the instructions below:

Android
To adjust your mobile push notifications on your Android device (OS 6.0+):

    Go to your device settings.
Tap Applications > Application manager > Facebook > Notifications.
Turn on or off notifications from Facebook.

That's what I tried originally, but as I mentioned I don't have a Facebook app on my 'phone, so I can't get past Application manager

and

To adjust your mobile push notifications in your Facebook settings:

    Tap
    Tap Notification Settings
From here, tap to adjust how you get notifications and what you get notified about

I've already tried that and posted a copy of what I get - oops just noticed it didn't attach itself so I'll try again.  There is no way I can tap to adjust how I get notifications or what I get notified about on my 'phone.  I've turned off all the other notifications possible so I don't get texts and I don't get pop ups on my laptop.

Falkryn - Oh it did attach oh well, and when I click on Learn More it just takes me to a similar page as the link you gave me.

OK, so on my 'phone I click on Settings, then under the list of Devices there is Display, Sound & Notification, Apps, Storage & USB, Battery, Memory.  I click on Apps and get a list of Apps.  So far so good, BUT, I've just realised I don't have Application manager.  However, I clicked on something called Android System WebView where there is something called Notifications which I clicked on as follows:

Block all - Never show notifications from this app (turned off)
Treat as priority - Let this app's notifications be heard when Do Not Disturb is set to Priority only (turned off)
Allow peeking  Let this app emphasise certain notifications by sliding them briefly into view on the current screen (turned on).  Is this the culprit?

Groom - this is not the same notifications that I turned off on text messages.

Sounds as if it could be, try turning that off.

I had to fiddle around with my phone quite a bit when I got a new one recently, as I realised that my emails, texts, Skype messages were appearing as notifications for all to see,  even when the phone was locked.

I'm going to turn that off and see what happens.  I guess if Facebook has only just started these Push Notifications it hasn't been a problem before.

The other problem is my 'phone made by Motorola, it seems it's not possible to change things on the 'phone that can be changed on other Android 'phones and, for instance, you can't use a tune of your own choosing as a phone tone, there's no way to do it you have to use the default tones of Motorola.  I thought it was just me but when I looked on line I saw it was a problem for lots of people and there's no way round it.

You say you don't have Facebook installed on your phone but are you sure? Sounds like a daft question I know but my new Android tablet came with it already installed. It may be installed but just not showing on your home screen(s).

Click on the Google Play icon, then click the three horizontal lines at the top, then My Apps and Games. Then click on Installed at the top of the screen and if it's installed it'll show in the list and you can uninstall it.

If not, sorry I can't help, I don't use FB!

I did a Google search and found that the Push Notifications are coming via Chrome - I've tried in the past to delete that and everything stopped working.  I guess like on my laptop I need to install Mozilla Firefox then delete Chrome

Anyway, there is a solution I clicked on the icon that looks like a button with 6 holes, which took me to all the icons of apps that are installed, then I clicked on Chrome.  Clicked on the 3 dot button, then went to Settings ->Advanced ->Site settings -> Notifications and there was https://m.facebook.com and underneath it shows Embedded in * (no idea what * stands for).  So I have now blocked it.  Why I couldn't do that when I went to Chrome, via Setting, then Apps I have no idea.

Also under Site Settings I looked at All Sites and found a few sites I'd looked at on the internet such as the local newspaper, Amazon etc, so I cleared them but the one I can't clear is m.facebook.com, which seems to be embedded in Chrome.

Hopefully, I have solved the problem. Fingers crossed.

If that doesn't work, a post on another site suggests this:

1. Open the Google Chrome settings page.
2. Click on 'Show Advanced Settings' at the bottom.
3. Under 'Privacy' section, click on 'Content Settings'.
4. Scroll down to 'Notification' section and click on 'Manage Exceptions'.
5. Click on 'https://www.facebook.com/' and in the drop-down menu, change it from 'Allow' to 'Block'.
6. Click 'Done'.

Thank you Groom, hopefully what I've done will work, if not I'll try your solution.

What I don't understand is, if this m.facebook is embedded in Chrome, why the push notifications haven't happened sooner.  I've had the 'phone for about 3 years now and they only started appearing a couple of weeks ago.  I did think it could have been an update to Chrome but looking on line it seems people have had this problem for years.
