Title: what do I do when the census records don't match?
Post by: innerspark on Sunday 18 February 18 21:30 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I am researching the Smith Family in Stanton St Quintin
There are 2 errors that are confusing

1.... there is a mix up as to whether Kate Smith was born in 1874 or 1889. Generally, it seems she was born in 1889, however she appears on the 1881 Census, stating 7 years old (there is further confusion as there is another Kate Smith with parents as Thomas Smith and Sarah Butler, as opposed to Thomas and Caroline)

2...Thomas Smith, born 1858 listed on 3 census records. Although on the 1901 Census, it says he was born in 1868, I assume this is just a mistake?

Thank you

Hi Sue,

On the BMD, it doesn't list a mother's maiden name. On the census records she is listed as Caroline Smith. It lists her father as Thomas Smith.
Kate E Smith or Kate Elizabeth Smith, born 1889 - 1890.

The Kate Smith born in 1874 lists the mother as Sarah Butler, although I don't think that is the relative that I am looking for!

Thank you

What district should the 1874 birth be registered in?
same for 1889?

If you also gave links to the census records you hold it would make it a lot easier to follow.

Re districts -
It seems that both Kate Smiths were born in Stanton St Quintin.
So on the 1874 and the 1889 search they both come up in similar households.

Earlier I searched Thomas Smith and Sarah Butler on ancestry, they have a daughter Kate Smith, born 1874, however she is born in Sutton Benger.

The details I have
Kate Smith, born 1889, Stanton St Quintin
Father - Thomas
Mother - not sure - Caroline?
She had a brother called Francis

Kate Smith married a man called Charles Gribble.

The confusion comes with - the mis match in the census records, re her birth and her parents. Did Thomas Smith marry a Caroline Smith? I can't seem to confirm that

KATE SMITH b 1889 didn't have a father at birth/baptism.
Any later "father" would appear to be a polite fiction.

The MOTHER of Kate b 1889 would appear to be Kate b 1874, who was the daughter of Caroline.

Neither Kate has a father at birth/baptism

Thank you Pauline, is that on her birth certificate? How else can we confirm that?

(doesn't appear to have a father)

Which particular piece of info are you querying?
The information is in previous posts, go back and read them carefully.
It's easy to miss information if you rush

It is confusing that her father isn't listed. Is it best I order a birth certificate to get confirmation? Thanks

Which "her" ?

at reply 6 there are the baptism of BOTH Kates.
At other posts there is the absence of a Mother's maiden name in the birth indexes.

I was referring to Kate Smith's (1889) father , it says that he isn't listed and that any later father is a polite fiction.

Ah, sorry, reading back through all the posts now.

There are TWO Kate Smiths.
Kate the daughter of Caroline and Kate the daughter of Kate
If you do not indicate which one you are on about , you will confuse yourself and everyone else.

Thank you, now I think I understand

Kate Smith 1 - 1874, mother Caroline

Kate Smith 2 - 1889, mother Kate Smith
Thomas Francis Smith, 1888 - also mother Kate

Thanks for your help. Sorry for the confusion.

Pauline J I think you need to read your posts and consider the tone you are using in the way you reply to newbies. I have read your replies to two different posts in the last two days and if I was them I would be put off from contacting Rootschatters again.
I have never commented on individuals before but I was surprised on both occasions at the way you answered queries. We were all new to the hobby once.
