Title: Doctor Hywel Rhys
Post by: Fionamoses on Monday 19 February 18 11:47 GMT (UK)
Hi.
I was wondering if anyone could help.
Myself and some work colleagues are interested in finding out the history of our work place.
It is currently being run as a private care home supporting young adults.
We have spent some time looking online however we have not had much luck with finding out  information about the building or family history of who lived there.
Information we have found is that a Doctor Hywel Rhys lived and worked at the house in the late 1890- 1905. We are very interested in finding out some information for around this time - information regarding family ect.

We also found out that the street name was named after the Doctor - naming it Doctor's Road.
It is now called Neuadd Road but many people still refer to Doctor's road.

The address is Glangarnant House in Garnant near Ammanford.

Thank you for your time.

Fiona

You might try this source as well: http://newspapers.library.wales/home

I've found two mentions of him but my Welsh is non-existent! Worth searching for him in different spellings too - Rees and Howell. You never know.

He's on the Medical Register for 1887; registered 1871; LSA 1869; MRCS 1870; LRCP 1871

Some doctors had informative obituaries in The Lancet - worth a look, too.

On the next page Glangarnant is also recorded with Arthur and Hannah Jefferies. Arthur is a gardener, so perhaps there was a gardener's cottage within Glangarnant.

Thank you all for helping with the search. I have looked at several newspaper articles and the spelling of his name is different on many documents. Maybe that's  why it's proving to be a little tricky..

Thank you for the info on the Gardener. Will take a look at them now.

Thanks again :)  :D

Thank you all for helping with the search. If we have the correct one  I see he had no children. My work colleague has found out that another Doctor lived there after Doctor Rhys. A Doctor Warner. I have been told by several people that Doctor Warner lived there and he had a small daughter that passed away. Unfortunately I can't find anything at all on him online.  :'(

Did Dr Warner live in Glangarnant House immediately after Dr Rees or was it a while after?

Do you know the name of the girl who died or any timescale please?

Doctor Warner.
Yes he lived in Glangarnant House but I'm  unsure of a date.
I've asked my husband to ask his Grandfather. I'm sure he has spoken about Doctor Warner in the past. Will give him a bell now :)

Hi again, was it always associated with a doctors practice, as it appears to be the household of Cecil J Davies a Colliery Agent in 1939?

Glangarnant House is on Neuadd Road, Garnant, Ammanford.

People nick-name it "Doctors Road" after many Doctors who lived on the road and in the house.

That is my problem, he is at Newport Road aged 63, who was at Glangernant in 1911, Neuadd Road comprised two households both mining families.

A lot could be written about Mr Ress since coming to Glanamman twenty three years ago, since he showed a deep ineterst in educational, political and social matters of benefit to inhabitants. Glangarnant stands in the upper part of Cwmamman, Carmarthenshire, and to this area Mr Rees was a medicine in the face of great and lengthy objection to get for them one of the main seasonal blessings that a multitudinous circle of people to possess, that of a supply of pure water from Fforest Fawr Wells. He was the leading Chairman of Llanguicke School. He is a Justice of the peace of Glamorgan and Carmarthen counties and is a member of the council of the last county, having in every election been returned unopposed over the Quarter Bach division. In the first meeting of the county council  he was appointed as preparatory Chairman. While in this temporary post, he felt it was a responsibility on him, in a county as Welsh as Carmarthen, to open proceedings with a few Welsh words, causing surprise amongst the old county organizations who at once asked for a translator.

He took a prominent role on behalf of the Liberal party in the recent East Carmarthen and West Glamorgan elections, and many an interesting political meeting was held in the passing years from his dwelling under the sponsorship of the Anthracite Miners Society, where some of the frontline ministers were talking, namely Mr Thomas E Ellis M.P., (twice), Mabon, M.P., Mr Thomas Burt M.P., Lord Battersea, the late MR R.H.Powell, M.P., Mr. D.A. Thomas., M.P., Mr D,Randall, M.P., Mr. J o’Connor Power late M.P., and others. Mr Rees is this year’s President of the East Carmarthen Liberal Society.
He did much  good to the social circumstances of his district it is known that the upper section of the valley, containing Cwmamman and Brynamman, well known for years for the excellent yearly concerts held there, where famous singers like Ben Davies. Maggie Davies, Ffrangcon Davies, M.A, Eleanor Rees, Maldwyn Humphreys, Dyfed Lewis & c.  It is acknowledged that Mr Howell Rees started theses concerts, which did so much good for the inhabitants and which continue under the care of capable and enthusiastic committees. Mr Rees’s favourite pleasure is to do everything to promote the benefit and happiness of the people who he lives amongst, and he has been successful in this work.
