Title: Looking for Burial details
Post by: Foehn on Tuesday 20 February 18 02:25 GMT (UK)
Looking for likely burial place or details for Rhoda Bethell  Born in NZ, but made England her home and according to probate on her will, she was living at The Close, Vicarage Road, Staines, Middlesex when she died 23 July 1965.

If she was buried there are two large graveyards apart from those attached to churches in Staines area.  One is along the London road towards Ashford, the other a bit further along that road on Long Lane. There is also a small one in Stanwell She may also have been cremated at the South West Middlesex Crematorium in Hanworth, Middlesex or Woking Crematorium.

Have you looked on Findagrave and similar sites

Her will may indicate what she wants done with her remains  :-\

It took a lot of searching through New Zealand cemeteries before I found her probate. It is because I want to link her back with her family on Findagrave, that I would like to trace her final disposition.

She is a member of the Bethell family that once owned Rise Hall

You can really only contact Spelthorne council and see if they have a record for her in one of their cemeteries.  Let me know if you locate her.

Surrey history centre appear to have some newspapers which may have an obituary

Probably the Staines & Egham News, I am not sure if the Middlesex Chronicle covered the area

Something not right with that last link you gave me Rosie. I'm getting a 404 error.

the easy way to remember these i find is  The cemetery on long lane junction with London Road is known as Ashford Cemetery but is within the boundry of Stanwell . The one further along London road just before Staines common & nearer to Staines is known as Staines cemetery The one in Stanwell is on Town Lane & known as Lauser road Cemetery to be buried in Lauser rd you would have to have connections with ST Mary's Church in Stanwell village & lived in Stanwell for a number of years  There has often been confusion between the location of these cemetery's with people turning up at the wrong one as the distance apart is less than a mile .

Sorry my brain has just woken up .25 years ago i worked in the Bells Pub one of the oldest pubs in the Town this was on vicarage rd a short road at the end of town & leading onto the Lamas a large riverside garden  across the road from the pub is St Marys church built around 1829 ish  Vicarage rd was then a tight knit community with almost every one involed with the church this again is a church where you can be buried in the church grounds if you are part of the church worth a try phoning the church to see if she attended  phone no is 01784 469155

Am I right in thinking that St. Mary's might be Catholic? Although I have no proof of Rhoda's own affiliation, I do know her parents and siblings were Anglican. Nothing in her will to suggest where her final resting  place might be.

St Mary's is C of E    http://www.stainesparish.org.uk/about-us/our-churches/st-mary/

Are you in the UK your profile does not give your location.  It is a good idea to give us some idea on your profile of your location as it stops us from suggesting you visit places that could be the other side of the world.

:) Rosie, you are right. I am on the "other side of the world'. I was born and live in New Zealand.

Here is a little bit on the family I am trying to put together. Rhoda's sister Mary Ursula Bethell was a poet of some distinction in NZ.  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/186414674/mary-ursula-bethell (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/186414674/mary-ursula-bethell)

There is quite a bit about Mary in Te Ara https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/4b29/bethell-mary-ursula (https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/4b29/bethell-mary-ursula)

Her brother Marmaduke was a distinguished farmer in Culverden. Rhoda is the one I am having difficulty with.  Her name is listed in Findmypast, but I am not a member, so the index is all I can see. FamilySearch, of which I am a member, has her probate, but little else on her life.

IS this your lady in the 1911 census living in south Kensington with her mother Isabel age 67 a widow   born in Tasmania

Could well be. The family had some means and appeared to do a fair bit of travelling. Rhoda's birth was registered in New Zealand however, but that doesn't mean she wasn't born in Tasmania unless the enumerator got it wrong. NZBDM record 1879/13757   Bethell    Rhoda DOB 11/3/1879   Isabel   Richard.
Nelson, a probable birthplace is in the Tasman district of New Zealand.
The obituary on Brother Marmaduke has a confusing statement.
Quote
Mr Bethell was born at Nelson on November 18, 1976, and was the only son of Richard and Isabel Bethell. Richard Bethell was then the owner of a property which he called Burnham, after his birthplace, Burnham Beeches, in Surrey, and this is how Burnham in Canterbury derives its name.
He's on the NZBDM register as born Nelson New Zealand, so the reference to Burnham Beeches may be a reference to the family "seat" or the birthplace of his father who died in New Zealand    30 Apr 1885; and, yes Isabel was certainly a widow in 1911

Did Richard Bethell marry Isabel Anne Lillie in 1873  :-\  The marriage licence for that couple gives Richard of Shopwycke, Sussex & Isabel of Mayfair.

Mary Ursula Bethell (looks like Bothell)  baptised 25 November 1874 at St Mary's Horsell parents Richard &  Isabel Anne occ 'Esq'  abode Horsell.  Image on Ancestry.

I was really hoping there would have been an 'address' on that record - I lived in Horsell and was married at St Mary's  :)
