Title: Old German Handwriting
Post by: AlanW4209 on Tuesday 20 February 18 16:25 GMT (UK)
I could use some help with the transcribing old german handwriting in the attached death church records. In the first document I know-

Heinrich Westheide  Gutersloh Eppinghofen   Z???
                                                     Nr 33(?)

In the second document the line begins with-

????  Gertraud     ??????   December 24     27     46   ????????????????
           Blum

I am attempting to learn how to do this myself but this one is tough. I can’t even make out the column headings either

Thanks for any help you can offer

Hi Alan,

That's a tricky one!

Is there any chance you could provide a scan of the headings?
That might help a little bit.

The only thing I can make out is "Hinterließ" (left behind/bequeathed) as the first word of the text passage on the right side of the 2nd scan.

Tricky indeed!

The cause of death for the second individual whose full name I can't make was Abzehrung - literally wasted away - generally refers to TB.

Under 'Dezember 24.', it reads 'Vier u. zwanzigsten Morg[ens]?'. In which year was the death?

It might read 'Kind' at the end of entry.

If you can provide a larger scan, it will be possible to compare the letters from other entries.

Following please find the column headings. It is very challenging to shrink these pictures so they will be small enough to upload. The full size original files are free to view on Family search

I can reduce the quality of the images, is that preferable to cropping? My first time trying to do this. When I try to transcribe this type of handwriting I like to enlarge it as much as I can, which is difficult with a lower quality image

Thanks for all your help!

That's great.

The second one reads 'Ehemann von Gertrud Blum'

At the end of the entry 'Hinterließ 6 unmündige Kind[er] und seine genannte Ehefrau'.

Henrich Westheide was some sort of Schmied - smithy.
