Title: Okehampton Boys School (Board School)
Post by: Carol Mack on Wednesday 21 February 18 11:10 GMT (UK)
I was wondering if anyone knows the age range of the pupils at Okehampton Boys (Board) School. Is it possible that an 8 year old could have been attending....did it have a Junior School? I have found a record in the punishment book :( that is of interest to me but no indication of the age of the child. I see it merged with the Girls School in 1925 to become the Senior Mixed School which makes me question my 8 year old.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Carol

There is a photo in the Western Times in 1908 ( Friday, March 27, 1908, Issue 18320, p.6) of the Okehampton Boys School of the students in the "youngest Standards". They look pretty young, so I think your 8 year old would definitely fit.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I think my 8 year old would fit in quite nicely!

It's a great photo!

Many thanks again,
Carol.

You're welcome Carol. There are some mentions in the newspapers of students of the school, mostly for academic or sporting achievements. What is the name of your chap? I could look to see if he is mentioned at all if you'd like.

Hi Maddy,
Sorry for the late reply. Many thanks for offering to look at the papers but someone has already done those for me and didn't find anything. I think there was a lot of coming and going between Devon and Cornwall! I guess next stop will be the archives in Truro.
Many thanks again for all your help.
