Title: Cousins Marrying How Do I show This?
Post by: RobinOz on Wednesday 21 February 18 20:37 GMT (UK)
I have discovered that my grandparents were cousins. This means that my grandfathers mothers parents and my grandmothers mothers parents are the same. Do i show them twice in the tree? I'm not sure how to link them. I'm using Myheritage website.
Thank you
Rob

Hi no don't add them twice add them once and when you go to add them as parents again do you have an option to select someone in your tree

Hi Wendy,
Thank you for your prompt reply. Not that I can see. I may have to delete the people from one side of the tree.

I do not use My Heritage but Tribalpages asks if the person you are entering into the tree already exists , if they do you then enter their name and date of birth so that they merge. Maybe you should start a Tribalpages tree.

I do have a My Heritage tree and I agree I can't see how you can link them on the website.

HOWEVER - My Heritage provides free tree software to allow you to edit your tree on your computer and then synchronize it with the web site. That software definitely does let you select someone already in the tree the way you need.

If you are interested the software can be downloaded from this link https://www.myheritage.com/family-tree-builder (https://www.myheritage.com/family-tree-builder) and the instructions on how to use it are in the Help Centre on the My Heritage site.

If you don't like the software you can never use it again but the web site will happily display the relationship once it is set up - I have a brother and sister marrying sister and brother with the parents listed correctly :)

Hope that helps.

ITBookworm,
I tried on the web site and it was too hard. I then went in to the software and it has many more tools for each person so i did mange to do it there. I did have to print that part of the tree twice to get my head around it all.
Thank you kindly!

I am having the same problems but on an Ancestry.co.uk tree.
My 2 x gt grandparents were cousins, i.e. they have the same grandparents.
Despite trying to merge them as duplicates they appear twice on my tree. Is there a way to show them as married cousins without the two entries?
Any help would be gratefully received.

See this thread Duplicate Names (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=791337.msg6485282#msg6485282)
I seem to recall another thread which also discussed this topic but I can't find it.
The advice, I think, was to click on one of the duplicate names and display their tree and everything was AOK. The duplicates only showed in the diagram if another person was the focus of the tree but not in the listed individuals.
 Does anyone know of it?

The best thing to do is forget about poor online family tree programs and compile your tree on your home computer using a good family tree program.
I use Brothers Keeper but there other good family tree programs available.
Most online tree programs have limitations and sometimes these limitations can be overcome by uploading a compiled tree to the program.

Perhaps an even more important bonus is if your family tree is on your own computer you have full control over it.

Cheers
Guy

I have a brother and sister marrying sister and brother with the parents listed correctly :)
This happened in 2 of my lines. One brother & sister pair were probably 3rd cousins of the other pair. Daughter of one of those pairs married another 3rd cousin from same line.  ???

I agree with Guy 100%.
I, too, use Brother's Keeper (have been doing since the DOS days).
Having worked in ICT for over 30 years I certainly would not trust any of my data to a cloud based system (which is all that Ancestry and the rest are).
