Hello,
I'm new to searching memorial books but have just found that my immigrant to the US, (#1) John Thomas, of Llanfyllin, was baptized at St. Mylin, (16 Dec 1781), as were his children. I have the records of his marriage (7 Apr 1809, Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant, Denbighshire, to Elizabeth Lloyd, (daughter of James Lloyd and Anne Charles) and the baptisms of his children and the births/baptisms of his siblings. He and his family emigrated to Madison County, Ohio circa 1823 on the Brigantine Joseph, right after the birth of their son, Rowland.
Children: Jane, bap 5 Feb 1810
John, bap 22 Sep 1811
Anne, bap 4 Jun 1813
Elizabeth, bap 15 Feb 1815
James, bap 1 Dec 1816
Maria, bap 25 Jan 1821
Rowland, bap 18 Mar 1823
----------------------------
I believe his father to have been:
(#2) John Thomas, b. 4 Jan 1752, who married Susanna Roberts, 25 Apr 1779, Llanfyllin. He is often referred to as: John Thomas of Garthgell
Children baptized at St. Mylin
Susan, b. 2 Oct 1780 (mentioned in grandfather's will?)
(#1) John, b. 16 Dec 1781 married Elizabeth Lloyd 1809
Jone (Joan?), b. 13 Nov 1783
Elizabeth, b. 14 Aug 1785
* I am interested in knowing whether any of these family members might appear in St. Mylin's memorial books.
----------------------------
I further believe that the father of (#2) John Thomas was, (#3) John Thomas who married Jane Jones, 22 Jun 1748, St. Mylin, Llanfyllin
Children baptized at St. Mylin
(#2) John, b. 4 Jan 1752, bap. 12 Jan 1752
Edward, b. 12 Mar 1758, bap. 14 Mar 1758
Jane, b. 13 Feb 1761, bap. 15 Feb, 1761
Sinah, b. 27 Aug 1764, bap. 29 Aug 1764
I have transcribed the will (NLW), proven 16 Oct 1793, of a John Thomas the elder of Garthgell, yeoman and it mentions the above named 4 children and his granddaughter, Susannah, the daughter of his son, (#2 ?) John Thomas. I have no idea what happened to his wife, Jane--she is not mentioned in the will and I haven't found any death/burial records to prove her death. I have found a record of a John Thomas of Garthgell, who was buried 21 December 1792 in Llanfyllin.
* I would like to know if any of this family are in the St. Mylin books.
* I would also be appreciative of any help given by others who might be researching this family.
Most of all, thank you for taking the time to peruse my query.
Liz

Jane wife of John Thomas of Garthgell was buried on 10th February 1783 in Llanfyllin.
When you say memorial books, do you mean the parish registers?

David,
Thank you for your replies and information. The information I have has been culled from "free" FindMyPast weeks, the NLW wills, and familysearch. I didn't see the burial for Jane Thomas, 1783 on my last visit to FindMyPast. Maybe all of the records aren't available on these "free" weekends.
I'm of the opinion that memorial books are a compilation of the burials in a churchyard or memorial plaques within a church. If not, then that is what I'm seeking. I would love to have the burial information on the above named families.

The Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society has copies of memorial inscriptions

David,
Thank you again for the information. I will have to go to our county library and get back on findmypast. Looks like I missed some of the family. Thank you for your input and help.

I just received some booklets ordered from the above mentioned genealogical society. For anyone searching for memorial inscriptions for their family, the original tombstones of the cemetery are no longer there and are most likely buried within the churchyard. The MIs contained in the 2 books cover the period early 1800s up to present day.

Hello,
I just found this site and this thread today. I am a descendant of John Thomas here in the US. He is my 3G grandfather. His daughter Sarah was born in the US and was married to my 2G grandfather in the Columbus & Newark, Ohio area. Would love to find out more on the family. Please message me if you can discuss further. Thank You!! -Kevin
