Title: Bruin/Bruen/Bruyn family in Graville, Le Havre, Seine, France 1700s and 1800s
Post by: Wayne Cook on Thursday 01 March 18 10:53 GMT (UK)
I am wondering if anyone is researching Bruin/Bruen/Bruyn family in Graville, Le Havre, Seine, France 1700s and 1800s.

I am trying to find out if my Daniel Bruyn born about 1813 Roscommon, Ireland is connected to them via his parents Edward Bruyn and his wife (I am lead to believe her name was Margaret). It is either him or his wife that is supposed to be from a long established French Family and as I don't know his wife's info, I have to start with his.

Daniel Bruyn and Sarah Nicholls's son Daniel Justin Bruyn was born in Graville, Le Havre Seine France in 1847 his birth entry is Page 97 (entry 190).

They also had a daughter Mary who was born and died the same place Daniel Justin was born (rue Catinat, in the district of Trigauville, in Graville).  Mary's entries are birth 1845 page 74 (entry 146) and death 1846 page 155 (entry 305).

Thanks in advance.

It's possible that Daniel went to work in France but that his family, or his wife's, originated elsewhere in the country.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/138212581?searchTerm=%22ellen%20bruyn%22&searchLimits=  To me the "with her people" means that they were back living with their relatives because if they were just back in the country the family originated then it would more than likely state back in the country of the families origins and not with her people. To me this says living with/near other relatives in the homeland of their roots especially with the "long established French family" part also added.

and they are to do with information on this family in the other countries Daniel had been in. Including the two births and the one death in France (that I have provided). This Thread in France is looking for information in France and to see if anyone is researching the Bruin family in Graville and has a connection to Daniel's parents. For all we know, Daniel Joseph Bruyn's parents (Edward and Margaret?) could have been born and married in France and then moved to Roscommon Ireland where Daniel was born about 1813

Could you write in phonetics the English pronunciation of the family name BRUYN ?
To me it sounds like a Dutch/Flamish name

There are BRUINS in England since a long time

Sorry but there are several spellings depending upon who wrote it down. I am guessing as a  phoenetic spelling it would be "Bru n" I believe this Bruin/Bruyn family came from France as Daniel Senior was born in Roscommon Ireland and his daughter when in France says that they were with their people who were a long established French family. So it wouldn't surprise me if the name  at some stage was de Bruin and the de part was dropped.

They left during the 1848 Revolution, they had only been in France for about 4 years. Daniel was a Blacksmith and was working in France. They had to flee as it was over French jobs being taken by non- French citizens. Those who fled generally had to flee without their possessions and without their wages for work performed. They went from France in 1848 back to England for a while and then moved to Australia

Ellen's Obit is linked above in a previous comment. It is Ellen's that says they were living with their people when in France and that they were a long established French family (plus they were there for 4 years).

While in France there were two births (Daniel Justin Bruyn 1847 and his sister Mary 1845) and 1 death (Mary 1846).

Daniel Justin Bruyn's birth entry 190 page 97  http://recherche.archivesdepartementales76.net/?id=viewer&doc=accounts%2Fmnesys_ad76%2Fdatas%2Fir%2Fserie_E_seigneuries_familles_notaires_etat_civil%2FFRAD076_IR_E_etat_civil%2Exml&page_ref=1714544&lot_num=1&img_num=1&index_in_visu=

These are the only documents I have seen with Daniel and Sarah's middle names on them

...she resided as a girl in France for some four years with her people, who were of a long established French family. During the troublous times of the Revolution her parents were forced to fly to England again for safety...

Notice the word AGAIN in the above which indicates the family had left France at least once before. Also, her father was born in IRELAND. The 'long established French family' could have left after the  French Revolution (1789) or the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) to give two examples of when people who have fled to England.

and the fact it says "with her people" implies that her people still lived there. The flee back to England again could also mean, that they had to flee back to England again as they had left England to live in France and not that they lived in France previously themselves.

I say this as Daniel was born in Ireland and married in England plus all of his and Sarah's children up to when they went to France about 1844 were born in England not France.

The issue is when did Daniel's ancestors (parents etc.) leave France. as Daniel's parents may have been born in France and (one or both of them) had to leave again (if they returned to France when Daniel, Sarah and family moved to France in 1844)
