A number of Foot family trees name a William Foot to be born around 1847. He would be the son of William b 1815 and Mercy Abt 1815. They would be living around the Hilfield/Batcombe area. I have searched and can't the birth or death for that William. I would like to know some info zbout him or have ghose trees made a mistake. Manh thanks Mark

Here's the family in 1851 - no William but there is a son Alfred born 1847, so impossible for them to have a son William born then unless he was a twin to Alfred and died.

I've got a christening in my family where the entry appears in numerous documents- the normal Parish Records, the Register of Strangers and the Bishop Transcripts. One of these is notable for inputting the entry as William son of William instead of Mark son of William. I did wonder if they were twins for ages until on balance of evidence we concluded that they had accidentally entered the son's name as the father's. Perhaps a similar thing happened here, and there is an entry out there for one of the children miswritten in this way?

I agree with Groom, except there would be no twin to Alfred born alive as the birth and death would have been registered.
The only other possibility is Alfred becoming known as William, but that does not appear to be the case in the subsequent census.

I looked at 15 different trees online and only one showed a William b.1847!
I would say this is definitely an error.

The gro index gives mums maiden name as Baker for Alfred and George (I didn't look at older children)
There are no other births for boys in that area with surname Foot and mmn Baker that I can see.
I wouldn't take any notice of what you have seen on online trees - unless the person can back it up.
There are many many trees with nothnig more than a load of rubbish on them out there. Even if lots of trees did show it, then it could well have just been copied from one to another.

I agree with the others
Mercy's maiden name Baker. No William Foot registered birth 1845-1848 Dorchester registration district with mmn Baker.

Was Mercy's surname Baker :-\ These are the only male births registered around that time

There is a 1861 census with a William Foot but he is the son of Frederick - perhaps someone saw that birth and added it to "your" family without checking.
