Title: Murphy family in Baileborough
Post by: Nicky Corbett on Thursday 01 March 18 18:25 GMT (UK)
I am looking for any help with Murphy or Lynch families in county Cavan please.
My grandfather was born in Bailieborough 14th July 1920 to Patrick Murphy (Postman) and Ellen Lynch. He married Winifred Weaver in Kidderminster, worcs, England in 1958 and died in 1996. I have no information about when he left Ireland or anything else in between. They had a daughter Patricia born 1960's who believes he was in the military.
I have found a possible marriage certificate for Patrick Murphy(31 yrs) and Ellen Lynch(25 yrs) stating they were married 19th November 1919, which lists Patrick as a postman again residing in Bailieborough and Ellen in Railiemore (Relaghmore) Fathers John Murphy was a Smyth and John Lynch a Farmer, although i am not 100% positive they are the correct records. I can't seem to pinpoint anything down so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Would John Murphy not being listed imply he was no longer alive? I was under the impression it would state deceased on the certificate if he was dead at the time of marriage? Sorry for the questions, I'm new to this and still trying to get my head around everything.

It would be either John Murphy of bailieborough or John Lynch is relaghmore not John O'Brien? I'm not sure if that reply was for someone else?

I'm familiar with the Ellen Lynch from Relaghmore that you mention.  Her father, John Lynch, was known as "The Fly."  By extension his family was also "the Fly."  Ellen was born in 1894, the same year as my grandmother Agnes Brady who lived on the farm next to the Lynches.  The Lynch Farm came to them through the wife of John.  She was Mary Brady and was the daughter of Bernard Brady who had gotten the farm from his own father, Charles Brady.  The deed records show the change in names very clearly.  Bernard Brady was the brother of Terence Brady (therefore also a son of Charles Brady).  Terence was married to Bridget Smith and they had a son Anthony Brady who was my great-grandfather.  Terence died very young and Bridget married again -- to a Thomas Heery.  She and then her Brady son, Anthony, inherited the Heery farm.  That's where my grandmother and her 9 siblings grew up.  It remained in Brady family until the 1950's, when it was auctioned for taxes.  The Bernard Brady/John Lynch farm remained in the Lynch family for several years after 1900.  You can see these people on my tree at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/8878018/family/familyview?cfpid=162167835226
