Benjamin's military records give details of his children and he mentions that his wife Nelly nee Bailey who he married at Registry Office Birmingham, 1st December 1900 was deceased.

Benjamin attested 15th November 1915, so Nelly dies between March 1902 and November 1915

Nellie Ellen Florence born 30th March 1902
John Henry born 22nd March 1901

1911 for Nellie Hucks born 1902 living with Charles & Alice Bailey. Her relationship is recorded as niece, which would imply that Charles was her uncle and therefore brother of Nellie -

In 1911, Benjamin appears to be in a lodging house in Coventry, with his surname written as Hooks. He claims to be widowed.

Closest fit for an actual death between 1901 and 1911 is Emma Ellen Hooks, 29, Q1 of 1903 in Sheffield, 9c 368.

Marriages, Birmingham Q2 1901
Charley Bailey  <<<
Christopher Eurell
Alice Feasey   <<<

Think Charles died 1912

Trying to get a clue or two about how she referred to herself.

There's a decent fit for Nellie and Charles in 1891 at RG12/2389 folio 37 p20 & folio 38 p21:
2c3 Brass St
James Bailey, Head, M, 45, Living on own means, London
Caroline Bailey, Wife, M, 43, , Warwi'ks B'ham
Sarah do, Daur, S, 17, Jeweller folk?, do
Ellen do, Daur, S, 15, Tin worker, do
Charles do, Son, S, 12, Scholar, do

A possible fit in 1881 at RG11/3009 folio 125 p11:
5 Talbot 4 Back
James Bailey, Head, M, 59, Gun Maker, Warwk:re Birm:m
Harriett do, Wife, M, 58, Chain Maker, do
John do, Son, M, 35, Jeweller, do
Caroline do, Sons wife, M, 35, Chain maker, do
George Bailey, Son, U, 14, Glass Blower, do
James do, Son, , 10, Scholar, do
Sarah do, Daur, , 8, do, do
Neeley do, Daur, , 6, do, do
Charles do, Son, , 1yr, at home, do

A bit of confusion about the name of Caroline's husband, but everything else seems to match up.

Her birth appears to have been registered as Nellie - there's a group of Baileys including Nellie with mmn Hanman that fit the censuses

Daughter may also have died young.

Marriage, Dec 1922 Birmingham 6d 610
Clarke, Harry
Hucks, Nellie F.

Likely birth of a daughter in Birmingham, Sep qtr 1924

Birth of a son in March qtr 1926
And in the same quarter
Death, March 1926 Birmingham South 6d 91
Clarke, Nellie Florence
age 23

Almost a carbon copy of Hucks-Bailey
Could both mother and daughter have died as a result of childbirth?
John

Free index to the 1939 Register has that daughter born 1924, Nancy A (later Goodwin) in Birmingham C.B. with Harry Clarke born 1901 and Elsie M Clarke born 1903 and others.

Possibly Harry Clarke and Elsie M Heath in Birmingham in 1931.

One thing, Nellie Florence died Birmingham South, the likely son was born (and possibly died) Birmingham North.

I agree with Andrew that the census entries he quotes are a possible fit.

Caroline Bailey is showing as living with son George in 1901 with son James next door.

To add to names "confusion" I think Caroline may also have been known as Catherine.

Possible marriage:

James Bailey and Catherine Hanman 1 Jan 1867 Aston Juxta,Birmingham

Catherine Hanman is recorded as with parents in 1851 and 1861 census (surname transcribed as Hauman). Father is Charles Hanman, a pearl button cutter, mother Mary A.

A baptism in Birmingham St Luke 29 Dec 1850 ( born 12 March 1847)  seems to have her first name as Caroline. Baptised same day as brother Charles.

Groindex seems to have birth as Catherine Handman - mothers maiden name Cubbage. This is also the mother's maiden name  of siblings Charles and Thomas.

Marriage 9 Sept 1846 St Martin

Charles Hanman widower pearl button maker
Mary Ann Hood widow -father William Cuppeage.
