How do I go about finding out which of the two following men was in the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards?
I have a photo of an ancestor in the uniform (checked for authenticity), but do not know which relative it is.
The first name is JAMES RYAN
the second
JAMES WOOLLEY
If anyone can help, I will be extremely grateful.
Many thanks

Hi Su
Are we talking about WW1?

Ooops! sorry Casalguidi
That should have been sometime in the 1800s.
Don't know if that helps or not?

Can anyone tell me how I go about finding out which of the two men named above is the one in the photo I have. One of them was in the 1st Dragoon Guards in the early 1800's, and I want to put the correct name to the photo.
Many thanks

Hi Su
If they were discharged between 1760 & 1854 (excepting some Irish regiments) then the discharge records have been indexed online (National Archives catalogue):
Search for the name (word or phrase) and WO97 (series code)
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp
See also their information leaflet regarding soldiers' discharge papers:

Best wishes
