I was looking at the 1851 census of my x2 Gt Grandmothers sister, Elizabeth Branford, and realised that prior to her marriage she was a servant to William Blackett, 241 High Street Sunderland. Was that 'THE' Blackett who had the High Street Drapers Blacketts?
Then I was then looking at her sister, Maria Branford, marriage certificate dated Mar 1853 and to my suprise at the time of her marriage she was living at 242 High St Sunderland. However I can't find 242 on the 1851 Census or the 1861 Census to know who lived there. Can anyone help Please?
Maria was my 2x Gt Grandmother, in the 1841 census she was with her brother in South Hylton. She married John Reed in 1853 and I always thought that he was born, lived and died in South Hylton. But I found that he was living in 30 Union Street at the time of their marriage.
They were living in Sth Hylton Ford in 1841 and after that until at least 1881 so I can't understand the addresses on the marriage certificate. Any ideas?
I would be grateful of any help thank you.

242 High Street West, Bishopwearmouth, was the shop of Wm. Blackett, Linen and Woollen Draper, in the 1858 Directory.

Thank you for the replies Stan.
Would there have been apartments above the Blacketts shop where people lived?
It looks like my 2X gt Grandmother would have followed her sister into service for a family but in no. 242 High St.
I think my Grandfather must have used the Union St address so that they would save money by not having the Banns read twice - otherwise I can not think why he should have moved there from Sth Hylton, where he was a shipwright, and then back again after they were married.
Any ideas anyone?

There must have been accommodation above the shop in the old buildings.
In the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette - Friday 03 December 1880 it states that the new Blacketts Buildings were ready for occupation in the next few days.

Thanks Stan.
Yes, looks like there must have been accommodation above.

There is no No. 30 in the Union Street, South Hylton. In fact on the 1873-1877 plan there are only two houses https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/435389/556751/12/100215
However in the 1861 census there are a number of families there, but unfortunately the houses are not numbered, RG 9; Piece: 3770; Folio: 56; Page: 28;

There was a 30 Union Street, Bishopwearmouth. Union Street was between 236 & 237 High Street.

Many thanks for all the information Stan & justmej.
I have looked at Union St South Hylton and feel it must have been the one in Bishopwearmouth he was living as an address of convenience at the time of his marriage as the one in Sth Hylton just seemed to be one or two houses as you seemed to think Stan. But worth a bit of research before making a decision.
Thanks

Just a follow up to my 2x Gt Grandfather living in Union Street at the time of his marriage.
He was a Shipwright so could Union Street have been near any of the Shipyards where he could have worked does anyone know?
Also does anyone know of an old map with High St & Union St named. I can find old OS maps where the streets aren't named.
Many thanks.

You can Union Street on this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/120934737#zoom=4&lat=6067&lon=10636&layers=BT it was not far from the river, it depends on when and where your 2x Gt Grandfather worked.
Also does anyone know of an old map with High St & Union St named. I can find old OS maps where the streets aren't named.
You cannot get an old OS map that does not show street names, where have you looked?.
You can see a map of the Wear shipyards at https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Sunderland_Shipyards

Thank you for the reply and information Stan.
Think I can only say not looking in the right place or the right place on that web site to find the map with street names.
I don't know where he worked as far as I know he was born, lived, worked and died in South Hylton apart from when he married, when he was at 30 Union St and oddly in the 1861 Census he was said to be a visitor in the household of John Peatfield, Chatham Kent.
He lived at 30 Union St. Wonder if it was some sort of lodging house.

30 Union Street was a tenement house with two families in 1851,1861, and 1871, not a lodging house.
