Post by: Bilcor1 on Sunday 04 March 18 19:01 GMT (UK)
Have 17000 people on tree which is private and 9000 photos I read you just download people not photos or certs etc so do I have to do everything manual
I am not very tech minded (age related)
Have read the bit on back up but still not sure

Are you talking about backing up your tree from Ancestry onto a GEDCOM? If so, as far as I understand it, it is data only and won't copy your photos or images.

Yes Groom is right

It does work when syncing with FTM  that copies over media files ...

then I download from dsktop. FTM

Yes on to a Gedcom

So I think this answers the question

"It is important to note that because an Ancestry tree export produces a standard GEDCOM file, it will only contain textual data and not attached photos or records. This means that if you download your file for use in another program you will need to download and attach your media and Ancestry linked records manually."

Just tested it all and yes that is right.  No media just a straight Ged.

However the synced FTM (family tree maker) prog... I have does carry all the media over.. so its a good idea to get hold of that.. and then you always have two copies =

I keep my FTM on an external hard drive.. and then when I remember work with Ancestry and then ask the FTM to gather what I have just done.. and it does .. cos its clever .. it does ask for a weather report first.. !!!! but it updates my hard drive copy.. so have two copies.. (or more :) )

The 2014 FTM won't synch with Ancestry, the only one that does that now is the 2017, so I presume you would have to download a GEDCOM and that won't download the images. No harm in trying though, you've got nothing to lose.

The consolation is that you aren't likely to lose your tree on Ancestry, even if something happens to your computer. You will also still be able to see it if you stop subscribing.

I'm afraid it's going to be the same with any Gedcom backup - no images or photos. Maybe there is someone on here who has worked out a way round it.

I have the paid for Legacy 9 and it backs up on line to Legacy Cloud, as well as your own back up, so if you can't do that with the basic Legacy 9, then it is probably cheaper to upgrade to the Legacy 9 than pay for Ancestry or other program.  It's only £34.95 to download.

I see you actually want to copy from an Ancestry tree, but as the others have said even if you do that you will have to instal all the images and photos again as far as I know.

I'm not too sure if I am correct here - someone will perhaps enlighten me.
If you have saved/downloaded Ancestry Records to your tree - they will not be visible to you if you do not have a subscription.

RootsMagic v7 allows you to download a copy of the tree with all media as with FTM2017.  This works in both the free and paid for versions of RootsMagic, but you can only "sync" subsequent changes in the paid version.  If using the free version, you have to download the full tree again to get any updates you make.

That is correct, the Ancestry Tree is free, you pay your subscription to view images. Stop paying and you no longer see any images.

Does that include photos or images you have downloaded and saved and which you have actually attached to your tree or just links to Ancestry images?

If you have downloaded them to the hard drive of your own device, then all well and good, you will still have them and view them at your leisure. Anything attached to an Ancestry Tree will no longer to available to anyone without a subscription. The advice would be to download all the images you want access to when you have the chance as you don't know when you may no longer want to pay for the privilege. The cost of a stand alone package on your PC would seem quite low compared with the cost of year on year renewal of an Ancestry subscription just to keep your tree online.

Another reason to download images and save elsewhere is that Ancestry seem to be having problems with some of their datasets and images previously there are no longer available.  ;)

Having read smudwhisk's reply #18 I have had a play with the free version of RootsMagic because I'd like to attach a public, ancestors-only version of my very extensive private ancestry tree to my ancestry DNA results.  But it seems that the free version or RM won't allow me to create an ancestors-only tree out of the main one, or at least not easily.  Have I missed something?

I can easily create an ancestors-only GED using my (paid for) preferred FT software but it won't have sources attached.

I'm probably asking too much for free but I'd be interested to know if anyone has found a workaround.

Jane :-)

I only used it to download a tree prior to purchasing a licence, never tested the upload facility before or after purchase.  I use Family Historian so my tree are stored in that.  I only use RM to sync a copy of a friend's private tree which I host on Ancestry for her and a couple of partial public trees which are offshoots of my own research.

The OPs question was about downloading and it was me that mentioned the sync restrictions on the free version.
