Title: 1939 Census help please.
Post by: suzanne2812 on Monday 05 March 18 21:17 GMT (UK)
Hi All
I have just looked at the 1939 census for the first time & found my great grandparents. I'm just a bit baffled.
My grandfather was Robert Doel b1892 & his wife was Nellie Caroline Richards b1898. They married in 1918 & stayed that way until 1945 when Robert died. Nellie went on to be with a chap called ? Daniel. My grandad didn't like him & my dad met him once. As far as I can see they didn't marry, yet on the census her surname is crossed out & Daniel clearly written over with some numbers. One looks like a date 12/8/54.
What I'd like to know is why would a 1939 census be changed in 1954? Can anyone through some light on this please?

Thanks Suz.

It's not a census, it's a "register". It was updated up until recently hence the additions. The name change indicates that the couple did marry. Have you checked freebmd to see if you can find a marriage?

Some information about the register here:

The 1939 register was updated to include changes of surname.
Maybe you need to look harder for a marriage?

Since 1948 the Register had been used by the National Health Service, who continued updating the records until 1991, when paper-based record-keeping was discontinued.

Changes of name for any reason were recorded; in practice this was mostly when women changed their surnames on marriage or re-marriage, but also includes changes of name for any other reason, such as by deed poll.

Could this be her death? -

Thank you all so much! I've never found a 2nd marriage for her & I always wondered. Grandad did not like him at all. I tend not to mention him as Grandad is very tight lipped (he's nearly 95!).
I shall dig deeper, but the fact Gladstone moved on so quickly does make you wonder if intuition played a part.
