Hello,
Having trouble pinning down where my Mum’s first destination was on her WW2 journey. (1944). She was on a train on her way to set up Hospital in Kohima, but the fighting meant they had to set up a Field Hospital in a jungle clearing to treat the Chindits. I believe she was a Lieutenant but can’t cross reference 14th Army with QAIMNS Nurses.
I’d like to look up her service number and see what it finds.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks,
David

It looks as though records are still with the MOD

Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps service records (1939-1945)
Visit the GOV.UK website for information about how to request a summary of a service record from the Ministry of Defence. An administrative fee applies.

Hi
This website has details of some Qaimns women it might be worth searching although you have to pay for results.

As the M.O.D still has all records for ww2 this website is unlikely to help you even though it may appear to have records. There are a few posts on rootschat discussing this.

Thank you Rosie !
Yes had thought that would be the answer. Just renewed subscription of course, and find it didn’t solve the problem.
MOD may not be either if the headings are accurate.
But will try.Only one relative I’ve been researching has been moderately easy.
Thanks again.

I think that getting her records from the MOD is a necessary first step. Once you have a clear identification of the unit she served with the War Diary at Kew should tell you what they were up to and where on the way to Kohima. Unfortunately there do not seem to be any short-cuts.

Thank you Skoyen.
Seems like MOD is the way to try. When I first looked at the site it can apparently take months to get a reply and other complications !
I will try.

Hello again,
Looking at MOD site can’t find a phone number just to make initial enquiry.
There is no heading to be sure they will look for records of a living person. It certainly mentions searching for deceased or even one’s own records.
So I’m reluctant to send money (30 Pounds Sterling),and then be told a few months later that they won’t search.
If anyone has had experience with Glasgow I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you !

Is your mother still alive Dave? If she is she can apply for her own records and it will cost nothing. you could fill in the forms for her and all she would need to do would be sign on the dotted line. :)
If she is not alive, you, as NOK, can apply but you will need to pay £30. It used to take up to a year to receive service records but I believe it is now only a matter of a couple of months.
Why do you think they may not search for her records?
If you have any concerns, put it in writing with your completed forms and payment and request a refund if they are unable to search for whatever reason. When I applied, they contacted me to say there would be a long wait and offered me a refund if I did not wish to wait. So I think they are reasonable and may be up for refunding if necessary.
Added: You do not need to supply a service number - full name, date and place of birth etc is usually sufficient. Everything you need to know is online.

Thank you Ruskie,
Yes she’s coming up 97 in July, and I’m just putting together a document for her based on a notebook she has. Wanted to surprise her but think via MOD is worth a go. So will do the forms with her and hope for the best.
I have her Service Number and several of the locations across India and Burma but not a timeline and just how close she got to Kohima and Imphal.
Thank you for replying.Glad you had success.
Kind Regards,
DAVID

Excellent Dave. Definitely fill out the forms with your Mum and please pop back and let us know how you get on. :)
My father in law was in the 14th and travelled through Kohima and Imphal but was late to the "party" I believe.
You are lucky to still have both your Mum and her notebook. ;)

Certainly will post with any news.
Thanks again.
