Title: Margaret RICHARDSON (1844-1905)
Post by: John Johnston on Wednesday 07 March 18 20:07 GMT (UK)
If I may, I would like to ask a favour of anyone going to the Historical Search Room, General Register House, Edinburgh.

My wife is researching Margaret Richardson (1844-1905) who was one of the leading lights in Women's Emancipation in New Zealand. She worked in an Infirmary in Edinburgh 1867-1876, sponsored by a Ladies Association (found this in Edinburgh PO Directories).

There is possibly mention of her in the records of New North Free Church, United Free and Church of Scotland, NRS reference CH3/468,
CH3/468/4
Deacons' court minutes, 1854-1868
and
CH3/468/5
Deacons' court minutes, 1868-1886

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
John in New Zealand

She is mentioned in the Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women -

Hello Harry,
Thank you for the link to Margaret Sievwright (nee Richardson) in the Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women. Unfortunately her write up is not complete as pages 324-325 are not shown. Would it be possible to send a link perhaps using "Margaret Sievwright New Zealand" as key words which may fix this?
Thanks again,
John

Sorry, I tried that but it didn't make any difference.

There's also an entry in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.

Thank you for trying, Harry.
We have the NZ entry, thanks.
Our main project is to verify such statements that Margaret Richardson did in fact work in the Ragged Schools or other institutions.
A lot of information seen today is based on an obituary published at the time of her death which may or may not be completely true.
Best wishes,
John
