Title: Charlton (Victoria) RSL Inaugural Committee 1919 Electoral Roll Lookups
Post by: Dalet on Friday 09 March 18 02:02 GMT (UK)
The Charlton RSL celebrates its centenary next year. As part of that event current members are trying to establish the identity of the original Committee Members.

I have attached a copy of the newspaper article from 1919 we are working from.
Some of the people I have been able to identify others not

President C Curnow (Clive William) 1891-1968
Vice President J Hedger (John Edward) 1895-1961
Secretary A Excell (Athol Frederick) 1897-
Treasurer H Peverill (Harold Joseph) 1887-1973
Committee:
K Kennedy - could be William Kenneth Kennedy 1890-1962
H Sunderland - could be Henry Christian Sutherland
A J Barber ( Alfred James) c 1880-1941
J Bedford - who appears to be the shop owner where the meeting to establish the branch was held
R Reeves
A Jolly
C Clark

Would SKS with access to Electoral Rolls be able to see if these people were residing in the Charlton district in 1919?

Athol Frederick EXCELL enlisted in the Australian Army in 1915 aged 18 and a half years.  He was a bank clerk born in Charlton and his father, also of Charlton was his next of kin.

He was wounded. His full record can be seen here.

So it seems likely, but not certain the man was a resident of Charlton in 1919.

Athol's father was on the 1919 ER in Charlton, maybe Athol hadn't registered for the roll as yet!

One Alfred JOLLY enlisted in the Australian Army aged 26 years.
He was born in and enlisted in Charlton as a farm labourer.
His father Charles (Edit typo) George was his next of kin.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/search/

He is on the electoral Roll for the district of Wycheproof in 1919.
Others of the name are at the same address, including one named Charles (EDIT typo) George.

JOLLY, Alfred. Glenloth. Labourer.

Again possibly, but not certainly the A JOLLY in the OP.

Death notice for Alfred JOLLY. Mentions his wife whom I believe was his second wife, the first having died in 1931. He had first married whilst on service.

WOW - Thanks everyone.

Sorry for my delayed response but I have been away for the long weekend.
What a great surprise to get this when I got home.

I believe we now have all men accounted for. I will try and put this in some order and may come back for some more information.

Thanks you all once again.

Hi,

Kenneth William KENNEDY's address when he enlisted in 1916 was Mananagtang where he was a farm labourer, his next of kin was his wife, Rose Ellen KENNEDY, High street, Charlton.

1917 Commonwealth Electoral Roll
KENNEDY, Rose Ellen, Charlton, home duties.
KENNEDY, Kenneth William, Post Office, Mananagtang, labourer.

1919, Commonwealth Electoral Roll
KENNEDY, Rose Ellen, Charlton, home duties.
KENNEDY, Kenneth William, Post Office, Mananagtang, labourer

Just to add,

I stated the following in my previous.

"Kenneth William KENNEDY's address when he enlisted in 1916 was Mananagtang where he was a farm labourer, his next of kin was his wife, Rose Ellen KENNEDY, High street, Charlton."

He actually enlisted as William Kenneth Kennedy and it looks like he was single when he enlisted in 1916 naming his mother, Mary Kennedy as his next of kin, his father was deceased, this was changed later to his wife, Rose Ellen Kennedy.

Thanks Gerry

William Kenneth Kennedy did marry Rose Ellen Gibney in 1916 - around the time of his enlistment.
No children born to this couple until 1919 when they had a son Bernard William who died the same year and is buried in the Charlton Cemetery.

It is interesting that the 1917 electoral roll still has him at Mangantang while he would have have overseas at this time.

I believe his enlistment attestation paper understates his age by 2 years (born 1878) which is confirmed by his death in 1944 aged 65.

Thanks again, Dale
