In 1841 the Richmond family are at Castle House in Donnington, just north of Newbury, Berkshire. HO107/17/23/8/11
Thomas Richmond 35 Ag Lab
Lucy 35
Betsey 15
John 12
George 9
Joseph 7
Helen 6
Maria 3
Mary 2
All born Berks, except Lucy & Betsey born in Hampshire
The eldest son was nearby at Shaw Red Farm HO107/17/21/5/4
William Richmond 12 Ag Lab born Berks
I know what happened to Thomas, Lucy, John, Joseph, Maria and Mary, which leaves:
Betsey (or Elizabeth) baptised Oct 1826 Newtown, Hants. Had daughter Emily 1 Jan 1846, and then disappears.
William born 1830 – only found in 1861 at River, Kent aged 30 railway labourer.
George born 1832 – in 1851 at Fox Grove Farm, Kingsclere Hants aged 20 farm servant
Helen (or Ellen) born 1835 – in 1851 with mother Lucy at Parrs Yard, Newbury.
I wonder if Rootschatters with fresh eyes can find what happened to these four?

There is a marriage in Shepton Mallett Reg District for Ellen Richmond to Joseph Gane in Dec Q 1853. I can't see an online parish record but they can be seen in the 1861 and subsequent censuses. The 2 daughters who appear in the 1861 census both have mmn Richmond. The only oddity is the place of birth shown for Ellen and her age is a bit out.
What do you think?
Barbara
-
Thanks for finding that, Barbara - but I don't think it quite feels right.
Ellen Gane nee Richmond was consistent that she was born in Shepton Mallet.
I would say she was born 1832 and baptised 14 July 1833 at Shepton d/o James and Sarah Maria Richmond.
Looks as if one of the Gane daughters, Ellen Sarah Maria, was named after her mother/maternal grandmother.
I can't find the 1853 marriage in parish registers so presumably registry office or chapel.
Lots of Richmonds in Shepton Mallet area - one thought to pop in the file.

Does daughter Emily disappear as well :-\

Have you discounted 1851 - Elizabeth Richmond age 23 born Hampshire - a servant living Westminster

Emily is with Lucy in 1851 listed as daughter.

Agree with you Steve. What a shame!

Have you also discounted William who in 1871 is in Tower Hamlets with wife Mary and child Emily. William is a Railway agent age 41. No place of birth given for any of them.
RG10/577 f46 p10
Ignore him born Staffordshire next census ???
-
Thank you everyone.
Emily was with her grandmother Lucy at Parrs Yard Newbury in 1851 and 1861. I have her birth certificate and she is Elizabeth (Betsy)'s child, despite what was recorded in 1851. No sign of her after 1861.
An Emily Richmond married Samuel F Slipper in Reading in 1876, but FamilySearch says she was born 1828! 1826!
Rosie, I've not discounted those Westminster and Tower Hamlets finds, because I've not seen them before - many thanks for finding. I'll have a look and ponder.
-
Sorry, I have discounted the Tower Hamlets one :(
-
Yes Rosie - our posts crossed

There is an Elizabeth Richmond marrying Duncan Mathison Bootchaser in St James Westminster on Aug 14th 1854, she gives her father as Thomas Richmond Farmer. Her address was 90 Dean St Soho.
-
Great find, Janan.
I used London marriages on Ancestry, but always forget the Westminster registers on FindMyPast.
Same district in Westminster as Rosie's 1851 census find.
Just need to find the Mathisons in 1861 or later, to confirm or discount.
-
I think the 1854 marriage shows Duncan Mathison's occupation as "Bootcloser".
Coincidentally, in 1851 census there is a Duncan Matheson aged 30, who is a "Boot Closer", at 2 Smith Court, St James Westminster, but he is already married to a Helen.
I'm not seeing a death for Helen, nor Duncan in any census after 1854.
-
Two children for the Mathisons.
Robert Henry born 7 May 1857 - no birth registration yet
Elizabeth born 29 Jan 1856 - registered as Matherson Q1 1856 St James, Westminster mmn Richmond
Both baptised 14 May 1863 at Trinity Church, St Andrew Holborn.
Address Grays Inn Lane and father Duncan a Boot Closer
-
So far I've failed to find the Mathisons in 1861 or later but will have another look.

Thanks for trying, Jan.
I've never known a family have so many members disappear !

;D
There is an Elizabeth Mathe(w)son and son Robert (Henry) of right ages being admitted and discharged more than once from St Pancras Workhouse in 1868.
Also a possible, Elizabeth Matherson 29 born Hampshire residing as a nurse with a family in Newington in 1861 RG9/339/5 pg14- no marital status given. I cannot find Duncan(before or after marriage) or the children anywhere.

Hello Jan. thanks for searching.
How did you get the St Pancras workhouse records - I tried LMA on Ancestry and can't find. What am I doing wrong? :)

I thought I would continue this thread, in the hope that some fresh eyes might help.
I've still had no luck finding other sightings of the Mathesons, namely
Duncan Matheson born Edinburgh c1820
Elizabeth (or Betsy) born Newtown, Hants near Newbury 1827
Robert Henry born 7 May 1857
Elizabeth born St James, Westminster 29 Jan 1856
apart from the possible death of daughter Elizabeth Mattheson, Q1 1867 at St James, Westminster aged 10.
I suspect their 1861 census entry is on the missing pages for the Berwick Street area in St James, Westminster.
Elizabeth Matheson nee Richmond had an illegitimate daughter Emily Richmond born 1 Jan 1846 at Speen near Newbury. In 1851 and 1861, Emily was living with her grandmother Lucy Richmond in Newbury.
I think Emily used her stepfather’s name (as Mathewson) when she married William Gibbins [sic] at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, Westminster on 9 Feb 1873.
The Gibbons couple returned to live in Newbury.
Please could someone find Emily living with her mother and stepfather in 1871 :D
