Hello, not sure if anyone is able to help but I am searching for a family living in the Birmingham area around 1911, my information is sketchy to say the least. What I know is that there is a young boy aged about one year old called Albert Hogan and his Mother Alice, maybe living in the Solihull area ? if any one can help I would be very grateful. If I find any more I will post it. Many thanks.

Checking the details you gave on FamilySearch, shows the GRO birth registered Q3 1910 in Solihull reg district as well as a death registration 1978 Birmingham. It does not show a baby Albert Hogan anywhere in England for the 1911 census.
The GRO index should tell you if there is a "mother' s maiden name" shown for the 1910 birth registration. If there isn't, perhaps Alice was unmarried at the time, didn't complete the census, used a different name entry was badly transcribed, etc.
-
Ancestry have an image for a family of Hogan containing Alice and Albert living in Yardley - but it is somewhat strange. :-\
-
There's a GRO death registration in Birmingham for the last named on the census. If the enumerator was removing the children that had died (checking "born" v "died" columns), did he remove the wrong Hogan?
-
Well spotted, and that would make much more sense - living children at the top of the list, and those who had died at the bottom.
-
I can't find Alice or Albert in 1911 but in 1901 there is a 13 yr old Alice Gupwell in a Childrens Home in Coleshill. Called Cottage Homes it is described as being "for the children removed by the Birmingham Board of Guardians from their Birmimgham Workhouse"

Just realised why that 1901 entry didn't seem to tie in with the 1911. 1911 census shows the ages of the children when they died. :-\ But it does now :) I'll wake up soon.

It actually overstates the ages at death of two of the three - but yes, it looks as though that was what they were trying to achieve.
I always think it so poignant when one sees the deceased children mistakenly included.

What a fantastic response ! thank you, sorry for being abit slow on the up take but to confirm on the 1911 census there are John 41, Alice 33, William 8, Fredrick 5, Albert aged about one, in Yardley. Have I understood it right ? Again many thanks.
-
Yes, you've understood it correctly. :)

Albert Hogan b 10 July 1910 died Dec qtr 1978 Birmingham.

There is a burial of an Albert Hogan at Yardley Crematorium in November 1978. You can download a copy of the burial register page for £5, just click in the person's name for download information.

living children at the top of the list, and those who had died at the bottom.
That's how i read it.

Another thought - has anyone managed to find a marriage between John and Alice? I have looked, but have failed. 1911 information says they have been married for 15 years.
-
I can’t find a marriage for them either - perhaps parenthood happened before they could get around to it, or even maybe John (quite a bit older than Alice) had a living spouse.
Alice is a bit of a puzzle actually - her birthplace looks as if it should be either Warwick (from 1901) or Crick, Northamptonshire. (Transcriptions suggesting Lancashire are mistaken).
Anyway, Crick is close to the Warwickshire border, so not necessarily all that far from consistency there. But although there is an Alice born at the right time in Crick, she is a with her parents, unmarried, in 1901.
-
Just had a look and I was wrong - there are not one but two people named Alice Gupwell born in Crick at the right sort of time, according to the 1891 census when they are both aged 12.
Alice E Gupwell dau of Richard & Mary A is the right one I think, who became Alice E Hogan.
Alice Gupwell dau of Joseph & Sarah is the other one.
-
Richard Gupwell and Mary Ann Beasley didn’t marry until Sep qtr 1883 (Rugby).
-
Alice E “Gupwell” is therefore likely to be Alice Emily Beasley, birth reg Jun qtr 1879 Rugby.
-
Hello, been away so am catching up ! Am I right in thinking that Alice E Gupwell was born to Mary
before she was married ? Also not sure how the Alice Gupwell in the home in 1901 fits into the story ! Any help please ! !
-
Northampton Mercury 25 Oct 1884
Richard Gupwell, labourer, Crick, was charged with neglecting the education of his ward, Alice Emily Beasley - fined 2s 6d.

Hi, once again thanks for the information, I will try to access the paper archives to find out more. I am always amazed by what people unearth on the site ! Much appreciated.
