Title: Timmins of Longton Stoke on Trent
Post by: dreamer33 on Monday 12 March 18 19:06 GMT (UK)
Hi there, So frustrated about this side of my family! I cant seem to get any further along for some reason!! Let me try and explain..........
My great grandma is Eliza Timmins born 1894 in Longton Stoke on Trent. She has siblings Sarah Ann, Mary Ann, Joseph and James. Its her parents that are baffling me!! Through the census info that I have (2) I discovered they were Martha Ann and Joseph Timmins. Now in the 1901 census they are 36 and 35 which makes sense, yet in the 1911 census their ages say 52 and 50 didn’t they get to fill in 1911 census’s themselves???!!! I know that these are both the same family in both census.  They always list themselves as being born in longton, I cannot find them on previous census! I have no clue of Martha Ann’s maiden name! No marriage info, no birth info.... I’m totally stuck! Soooo I decided to send off for my great grandma Eliza’s birth certificate! No father listed!!!!!!! Yet Martha has signed as Martha timmins her married name!?!?!? I’m determined to crack this I have a feeling something is not quite right!!!!! does anyone have any suggestions or words of advise 😬😬
Thankyou for your time sorry for the long post!!!

Her sister Sarah Ann also has no father listed:

Just putting 1901:
Joseph Timmins   36  miner's labourer   Longton
Martha Ann   35   scourer  Longton
Sarah Ann Timmins   10  Longton
Eliza Ann Timmins   7   Longton
Mary Ann Timmins   5   Longton
Elizabeth Timmins   1   Longton

presumably Joseph and James are born between 1901 and 1911?

Did Eliza Ann marry Thomas Everard? Is so then living with her in 1939 is a Joseph Derry b. 1863, perhaps this is Joseph 'Timmins'.

On the 1911 there is a James Timmins but cannot see a birth record, however there is this one -

James Derry

Looking for her death (if she keeps Timmins)

Deaths September quarter 1918
Martha A Timmins age  47    Stoke T.   so born 1870/1871, which does not fit with born 1865/1866 in 1901 or 1860/1861 in 1911.

Could Martha Ann's maiden name also be Timmins.  There is a Martha Ann Timmins b. 1870
On the StaffordshireBMD website

Oh my gosh that never even crossed my mind!!!! I have seen the 1939 census the James that is listed as Martha and Joseph’s son was in fact born a Derry!!!!!....... but why would he still list himself as Joseph Timmins in the 1901 and 1911 census  ???

It is exceedingly likely that Martha was born as Timmins, because her children were registered as mmn Timmins.

The questions are, why did Joseph Derry adopt the name Joseph Timmins, and why did they get their ages so wrong.

The birth in 1870 is the only one showing for a Martha Ann Timmins born from 1860 to 1871, so she appears to have sorted out her correct age for her death certificate.

Could James Derry/Timmons have been Elizas son?

modification:  No forget that!  I agree that Joseph Timmons could be Joseph Derry

Thanks for your time and help everyone  ;) I don’t think I’d of ever gone down the avenue that Joseph Timmins was in fact Joseph Derry even though it was staring me on the face all along!!!! I wonder why they never married! Maybe he was already married! I wonder why he took on the timmins persona.... brain is mushed I guess some things we’ll have to live with I’m sure it was all done for a good reason  ;D ???

I've just had a quick look on the  GRO site but can't find a Joseph Derry born in the Stoke on Trent area. There is a James Derry b Sep Qtr 1868 and a George Derry b Jun Qtr 1866 both with mmm LONG

might be worth following up and seeing if they are on the census records. I'm off to Wales for a few days holiday now so unfortunately can't have a look at the moment for you
