Title: WW2 Service records
Post by: Teletran on Monday 12 March 18 22:23 GMT (UK)
Good evening all,

I received a copy (poor quality) of my grandfathers WW2 service record today and to frank, much if it I do not understand and the abbreviations list that comes with it has limited use.  Would anybody be able to advise what some of these abbreviations mean? I appreciate it is a bit of an ask.  Any help is appreciated.

After the call up to 2RC Cardington it reads:
4 WG R RS
249 S......(may be Squadron - I can't make it out) I know my grandfather was station in Italy in 1944
'No flying TRNR Command - reason 'F'
battle(??) EMS Hospital
admitted to ............... (reading)
transferred to 'Battle Hospital' Reading pending HQ FTC
5 (or S) P.D.C reason 63
. v(?)O AA7
I (or 1) .B.P.O (?)
B.P.O
I (or 1) B.P.D
Papa
I RAF (cannot read)
NOLRAFGH
1 Sego depot
100 PDC

Many thanks

It is invariably easier to "translate" a service record from the original so that one can see the column headings of the form and how the entries relate to one another.  Can you photograph or scan the part of the record that has these notations?

What was his trade - it will be on another sheet somewhere.

Some is simply unreadable but what I have is:
4 WG 4 RC - 4 Wing 4 Recruit Centre – Bridgnorth
249 Squadron – Seaplanes at Calshot  Feb 41
HQ Flying Training Command – Shinfield Park Reading May 41
Next 1941 entries mostly unreadable but appear to show a spell in Battle (name not a fight!) Hospital Reading – Oxford Road Reading, now a Tesco
5 PDC Personnel Dispatch Centre Padgate Lancs – Jun 43
NWAAF North West African Air Force - the umbrella title for one of the Air Force elements in the Middle East  Jun 43
Another hospital admission, details unclear Jul ? 43
1 BPD  Base Personnel Depot – Algeria Jun 43
April 44 – unreadable another hospital admission?
No 1 RAF General Hospital which was in Torre del Greco Italy in 1944 and the dates are all 44
He comes home in May 45 to No 1 Signals Depot West Drayton
100 PDC Personnel Dispatch centre – Uxbridge for discharge Oct 45??

Knowing his trade would help to make more sense, he looks like a ground tradesman of some sort.  In outline, UK till Jun 43 then Middle East and on to Italy.  The despatch centres are places through which he passes en route to the next posting.

That's a great skill you have MaxD, very interesting, thanks for help. The service record is blanked out in places which is annoying as I am a blood relative and the time passed since death. All his civic life he was a tailor. Not sure if that help.
