My Try

That's amazing Rami - I really thought at best you might be able to clean it up a bit so I was not expecting any colour which has totally transformed this image.
Great work
Thanks as always

The suit looks 1880s but not sure about the tie.
Gadget
-
I thought 1880s too.
Carol

Thanks to Gadget & Carol for dating this photo

A clean up for Benjamin.
Carol

In my view 1870's & mid-late decade.
-
I was worried about that neck ware and just found a bow tie and collar, dated 1870s.The silk braiding lasted well into the 1880s though.
-
Wow! Carol - so much better & you've got rid of that nasty blemish under his eye! He looks quite the man about town now after his spruce up.... ;D
Thanks so much
Keith

My pleasure Keith :D

do you think he looks mid 20's or a bit older perhaps? I'm rubbish at ages ::)
-
I initially thought mid to late 20s, which made me think 1880s but, if born in 1856 and Jim's date is correct, he must have/started to lose his hair early. If my arithmetic is correct, he'd only be 24 in 1880.
-
I've just noticed that the jacket doesn't button up as high as many of the 1870s jackets of this style did. Am not sure of the late 1870s date that Jim has given.
Added - this is dated 1878 - see how high the jacket is:

and 1879

Won't add any more to the previous post ~
This one dated 1889

(difficult to find pics of 19th C men on line now the Vaughan site is only partially accessible)

So perhaps this pushes the date to between 1885-1889 & means he held onto his hair for a few more years ;)

This is one from 1877

I'd say 1877- 1885

Thanks Gadget - this almost looks like the same jacket

That would fit his age better wouldn't it as I felt that he looked older than 20ish. but I too wasn't sure about the tie.
Carol
-
1877 would make him 21 and I think he looks older, as you do Carol.
However, I gather that men were more likely to have beards and moustaches in the 1870s than 1880s! We'll get to date men's outfits one way or another, Carol ;D
Not found much on Mr Charles James Gearing yet!
-
I've still got the "L" plates on ;D ;D ;D
Carol
-
I added a splash of colour ;D

Very nice subtle colouring, Carol :)
A look through yet another book has produced two pics that seem to fit the clothing and facial hair - one 1879 and one 1880 - so ...
-
spoiling me now Carol - lovely colouring :)
Thank you

Have you got any details about him, Keith, in addition to his dates?
In my reading about menswear in 1870-1890, I've found that there was a style called 'Varsity' jackets - Cambridge ones were subtly different from Oxford ones. I don't think you had to have been to the universities to wear them though.

(wondering if there are any courses in Men's Clothing: 1840-1950 :-X )

Education: in 1871 he is a scholar but I note his older sister is a 'student' - could she have been at uni in those days? I am not aware that went to uni.
Keith
-
No not a 'uniform' - it was just what the style of the jacket was called. I meant occupation, etc. I'll look him up.
Added - see he was married by 1881

he was a Grocer's Manager in 1881, possibly with his own shop in 1891/1901, a baker's roundsman in 1911 (possibly working with his brother who had a bakery business) & on his DC my grandfather has given his occupation as retired master baker

You may already have this information on Charles John Gearing, but I thought I would post it anyway.
He was born in Waltham in 1860, son of Charles Pembroke Gearing, also a photographer.
Charles John seemed to have a number of studios, he was at 52 Regent Street in 1881. He also had studios at 433 Strand WC, 35 Milkwood Road SE and 57 Durham Road N.
In 1891 he was a photographer at Gleneagle House, Gleneagle Road, Streatham.

Does it say when he had the studio in the Strand, Pat?
