PLEASE can you help me.
I received my DNA results this week and have been contacted by a lovely lady in U.S. with "a match". We have been desperately trying to find out, exactly where our DNA "connects". Her thoughts are that is with MARY MARTIN (nee RICHARDS), born c. 1804 in ? Chalfont, who I believe to be my great, great grandmother.
My question is, was Mary Martin (nee Richards) c.1804 born in Chalfont, Bucks....or Chalfont, Pennsylvania ?
My tree reads like this:
William MARTIN c. 1805 (or 1806/7) in Cowden, Kent. His wife was Mary Richards c.1804 ? Chalfont
Daughter of William and Mary was my great grandmother, Lucy MARTIN b. 1833 Bognor, Sussex and died 1895.
Son of Lucy Martin 1833, was my grandfather John Alfred Martin b.1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent. (His name was changed from Martin to Jones when he was ten years old)
This is SO confusing to me.....please can you help.

Welcome to rootschat
It is quite possible that you are not related and that Ancestry has just linked the two Chalfonts ;)
Where do you have your family in 1841/51.
Just adding 1861 reference

Hello Rosie,
Heck, I would be so disappointed now that Ancestry have said we are a match, albeit a smaller match. But with your experience, you're possibly right.
I don't know how to work out where William and Mary were in 1841, as Martin is quite a common name and there seems to be a number of them when I look at the census.

FamilySearch has this.......!!
Name - Henry Martin
Residence Place - South Bersted, Sussex, England
Gender - Male
Christening Date - 20 Jun 1833
Christening Date (Original) 20Jun1833
Christening Place - South Bersted, Sussex, England
Father's Name - William Martin
Mother's Name - Mary
Lucy Martin
Residence Place - South Bersted, Sussex, England
Gender - Female
Christening Date - 20 Jun 1833
Christening Date (Original) 20Jun1833
Christening Place - South Bersted, Sussex, England
Father's Name - William Martin
Mother's Name - Mary.
South Bersted is very close to Bognor Regis. :)
According to FS, the 1861 census has Mary Martins birth place as Chalford, Berkshire.?
I have no access to original census returns, so is it Chalfont or Chalford. ?
Steve. :)

I am only suggesting it may be wrong as I understand that if the places of birth are not entered correctly they can produce mis matches.
Have you managed to find a baptism for your Mary Richards in Buckinghamshire. I see she married William in Sussex. - Good find for baptism Bucks boy, same parish as they married in ;D
I would say it is Chalfont, Bucks can't post image as it is a look up board.
-
Looks as though they baptised a son the same day as Lucy :-\

Have you seen the actual marriage entry for William Martin / Mary Richards.
I am wondering whether James Richards who is with them in 1841 is her son - was he illegitimate or was Mary married before
-
No I haven't Rosie, because I was never 100% certain as to whether I had the right person.
-
Rosie......the 1851 census says Lowden, but I'm as good as sure that it's Cowden.
Bucksboy......I just Googled Chalford, Berkshire and it doesn't appear to exist, so I think maybe Chalfont, Bucks still looks favourite.
Also, the "Family Search" record that you found looks to be correct I would say....an excellent find, thank you. I can't even go on the Family Search link that Rosie posted, because I am not a member. (sigh)
I THINK it would be safe to say that the DNA match is sadly, not with Mary Richards.
-
Familysearch is a free site you just need to register. It will then let you access some records that show images of the parish registers though these are in the minority, also links anyone gives you.

No I haven't Rosie, because I was never 100% certain as to whether I had the right person.
I think that the William Martin/ Mary Richards marriage is yours mainly because of James Richards being with the family in 1841 and the marriage being in the same parish that Lucy & Henry were baptised.

This is possibly Williams death
MARTIN, WILLIAM age 56
GRO Reference: 1862 Sept Quarter in NORTH AYLESFORD Volume 02A Page 175
Have you any idea when Mary died, does she appear on any more census
-
I don't know when Mary Martin died Rosie. She is on the 1851 and 1861 census and then I "lose" her.
-
No I haven't Rosie, because I was never 100% certain as to whether I had the right person.
I think that you need to see whether that marriage entry does say whether she is widowed or a spinster. There is a chance it may not say either way. It is a shame you cannot locate Mary on another census as she has already given her place of birth as 1841-not in County (Kent) 1851 Rotherhithe and 1861 Chalfont, Bucks.
Does this mean that you have now got to look at your match with this lady and see if you are related through someone else in your tree :-\
-
Yes Rosie, we now have to find out "how come" we are a match. I think it's going to be pretty hard to be honest.
-
Good luck, I hope you are able to work it out
-
Thank you so much very Rosie.....and thank you to the team for all of your help too.
-
For a £2, you could ask for a baptism for Mary Richards and a marriage search for any MALE Richards to a Mary, from BucksFHS.
A bit of a long shot, but could be worth the few £'s in the long run, if you keep within a realistic timescale for both.
Chalfont St Giles, or Chalfont St Peters and Little Chalfont will be covered, as the search would be for the whole of Buckinghamshire, not just the Chalfonts. ;)

Many thanks to you Bucksboy....food for thought.
