Title: Withoff's in Crewe - Gravestone
Post by: IJDisney on Friday 16 March 18 16:33 GMT (UK)
I am researching the Withoff family of Crewe, who came from Birkenhead, but originally from Prussia.

I have come across a newspaper report from May 4th 1917, concerning alleged abuse against Frederick William Withoff of Crewe, presumably caused by the anti-German feelings created by the Great War.

The report mentions a local's objection to a gravestone in the cemetery, erected by Frederick Withoff in memory of his father and mother.

I would like to know what that gravestone says, or if it still exists. Frederick Withoff's parents did not live in Crewe, so I do not think they were buried there, so I can not enquire via the burial records to find the exact position of the gravestone.

Frederick's father was William Henry Withoff (b.1838 Prussia, d.1879 Birkenhead) and his mother was Katherine Sophia Wendel (b.1845 Germany, married a John Gebherdt in 1885, and is last known of in Birkenhead in 1888).

Any help in finding this gravestone (or any other Withoffs in Crewe) would be much appreciated.

Withoff, Henry Charles (1946)
Withoff, Frederick (1940)
Withoff, Carl Wendel (1905)
Gebhardt, Catherine Sophia (1901)

They are all showing under the same reference

Thank you! So glad you passed on that information! Does that mean they are all in the same grave?

There is only one entry in the burial book listing all 4 names.

Hiya Rosie - geneanet.org records state the family are in Monks Coppenhall ( Crewe ) but also states that Pauline - who was a witness at the marriage - is in Liverpool ( might be Garston :) ...lol)

added
Pauline is born 1874 Birkenhead aged 17 as a Housemaid Servant in Liverpool 1891 census - she is in St Catherines Parish ...
she marries in Croyden - Pauline Sophie Withoff in 1901

Thank you garstonite. I have these certificates, and it is the same Frederick William Withoff as in the OP. For some reason he put his father's name down as  Henry.  The father appears as William Henry when he married Katherine in Sheffield, and when they had their children registered, so I'm pretty sure that was his name. Maybe he was known as Henry in the family. Plus he died when Frederick was 10, so maybe that is all Frederick could remember.

My records show that William Henry Withoff (b.1838 Prussia, d.1879 Birkenhead) and Katherine Sophia Wendel had 6 children: Frederick, Charles Henry, Emmie, Pauline, Annie, and Catherine.  I am decendeded from Charles who immegrated to Galveston Texas USA.  I have all the records for Charles and his descendent sin Texas, but have very little info or artifacts about his parents.  Do you have any details about William Henry Withoff and Katherine Sophia Wendel?     If so, I would be interested in collecting any artifacts.   Thanks for your time.   Otis

PS:   There was an earlier question above asking where William Henry Withoff is buried?  I have a letter from one of his grand children stating that William is buried st Flayback Hill Cemetery in Birkenhead.  Katherine is buried st Crewe.  Otis

That is great information.

I was researching the family for a friend, who has since moved away. Next time I talk to her about genealogy I will pass on your interest in making contact.

Hi, I’m currently sorting through odd items I have kept over the years. I have absolutely no idea where I got it from but I have a metal tag “J Withoff Butcher Crewe” I’ve attached an image. I wonder if it was attached to an animal? Perhaps a dog for catching rats?
Perhaps an animal bought from the market? I’ve been a vegan for 28 years so not really a fan of Butchers but still this is an interesting item. Quite faint but hopefully you will be able to read it. I realise this is an old post, hopefully it finds its way to you.

I am the owner of Adelaide House and whilst looking for some history of the house I found this information. Adelaide House was built between 1876 and 1877.
The Adelaide from which the street and house take their name comes from the daughter of Dr. Lord and his wife, who was the daughter of John Ashe, first vicar of St Pauls. Ashe bought the land on which the street and house now stand, it was previously allotments and gave it the name after his granddaughter.
Home to the Withoffs in 1911. Frederick William Withoff was a butcher, running his own business, and also a councillor in the Crewe Corporation (1910). The census shows the building having 7 rooms. Fred described himself on the 1911 census as a "gut dresser" and is recorded in the 1910 Kelly's trade directory as a "sausage skin dealer". This is on Broad Street I believe (St Michaels View?).

Hi there
My son has just brought this post to my attention. His father ( we were not married) is called Frederick Withoff. He lived in Devon, my son was born in 1980, but he originated from the North West of England. He is still alive, but not residing in Devon. He has another son and daughter from his marriage, I think.
