Title: Siam, Thailand
Post by: FDH on Friday 16 March 18 17:06 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know what would be the best place online to check for information on someone who died in Siam, Thailand in 1949, his last name was Mundie.  He was a teacher in 1891 according to the Scotland census so I assume he went out to Thailand to teach but not sure where to look for information.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

GRO Consular Deaths, available on FindMyPast, has this:

William H Mundie, born 1864, whose death was registered in Bangkok (1946-1950).

Thank you for that, found the info. Stupidly never thought to actually check Scotland's People and found out that he was a retired journalist when he died.

There's an obituary in The Scotsman, 26 April 1949. He had been editor of the Bangkok Times and received an OBE in 1937 ( I think it was actually 1941). During the Japanese occupation he had been allowed to remain in his home, under police supervision, because of his advanced age.

From Google Books:

"William Hacket Mundie, O.B.E. (M.A. 1889), a native of St. Fergus and a pioneer of journalism in Siam, where he was for some forty years editor of the Bangkok Times, died at Bangkok, Siam, on 9 April 1949, at the age of eighty-two. After graduating he became a schoolmaster before emigrating to Siam in 1896 as assistant ..." (Aberdeen University Review - Volume 33 - Page 200)

Thanks for that ShaunJ

Did not know he was an O.B.E, wish he was in my family tree! I'm doing a family members tree (cousin of cousin etc) so she will be so chuffed with this.  I have managed to find some articles in the british newspapers archives, including one for a son who died while climbing.

Hi there. I am a grandson of WH Mundie living in Thailand and I'm also trying to piece together some family history.
I have a few photos which I believe to be of his Father, Mother and 2 sisters which need names and verification. If you think you can help, please contact me.

Regards,

Arthur Sanderson
