Title: James Leslie Minion Rankin
Post by: rankpin95 on Friday 16 March 18 22:47 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for more information on the man above. I know he was born in Belfast in 1905, he moved to Toronto, Ontario permanently in 1934. He married Germaine Mary Lanoue in August 1935, and as far as I know they had two children.

If anyone out there has any other information on this family I'd appreciate the input.

Thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat

Canadian Passenger List shows a Leslie Rankin born 1906 Northern Ireland and aged 32 years - travelling Glasgow Scotland to St Johns New Brunswick - 23 January 1938 - also travelling Jermaine Mary Rankin aged 22 year.  A son B. J. Rankin aged 2 years - a daughter "J.A" Rankin aged 11 months - had been in Canada previously 32 Earl Street Toronto. Home - Lyon Street Ottawa.
Perhaps this is where you discovered the information on the 2 children. James had been in Canada from 1/3/1928 - 29 October 1937

Thanks for that!

Yes that is where I found the information regarding his two children. I know information is harder to get after the 1930s. On another ancestral site I found James Leslie Rankin to still be alive in 2003. I'm just trying to track down his relatives or at least know when he may have died.

RootsChat has a no living person policy - unless the 2 children are deceased - you would need to remove there names - that's why I used initials which doesn't positively identify them.

Apologies for that and thanks again. It would be interesting to find a common connection with James Leslie Rankin. I suppose I wont know anymore until the 1941 census returns for Canada are released.

Run Kitty is the obituary expert on here, hopefully these can be found. Were there any other family members of the Rankin family in Canada that you know of ?

Not that I know off, however, James Leslie Minion Rankin had two aunts (Rankin by birth) living in Pennsylvania during the same time. I've been able to trace his wife's Lanoue family back to original French settlers in North America. An obituary expert is certainly what I'm in need of I think!

Thank you very much.

You're very efficient with all of this, fantastic! I have most of that but thank you again. I was thinking of applying for a record search in the Canadian public records but since I'm not sure when James died that may be pointless. So, any help the obituary expert can provide would be great.

Thanks.

Many entries for James Rankin in Canada Voters Lists - Toronto - none to positively identify him as yours - some can be discounted and others don't match the wife's names.  Toronto would have been one of the area's that it would have been possible to find obituaries, other areas can be more difficult.
Nothing appears for the son's name or initials either - perhaps they moved on.

The most recent record I have of him is a voter list from 1963 and he is registered in Spadina, which I know is in Toronto. He may have died in the city or he and his wife maybe retired somewhere else, I cant be sure.

Hi,

The James married to Violet died on Jan 2 1971.  Obit in the Globe and Mail on Jan 4 1971 page 25.

It says that James Leslie (Les) Rankin, member of Canada Lodge No. 532 AF & AM, Beaver Chapter, Geoffrey Preceptory, former member Rameses Shrine, died Jan 2 1971 in Toronto.  J Les Rankin, husband of Violet Best.  Father of J L (male... full name is what you think it is  :) ) and L A (daughter).  No mention of his age or where he is buried.

Thanks RK -

Hmmm...............The wife and children's names  aren't matching the marriage details or passenger list  ??? Didn't mention an age either  :-\    He can't be the son of the first James Leslie, he had a "B" in his name.

Hi Sandra,

I just rechecked the 1971 obituary.  The son in that one is definitely just J L ... there is no B name.  The daughter is L A ... first name is the female version of her father's middle name.

I don't see an obit for a Germaine or Jermaine Rankin.

The baptism name was - Marie Elmire Germaine Lanoue  - could she have used the first name perhaps ?  You are a treasure trawling thru those newspapers.

Interesting RK - This looks like the grandparents with the son of James and Germaine  - UK Passenger List Montreal to Liverpool arriving 21 June 1940 - Duchess Of Richmond -  James Rankin aged 69 years (retired) - Rebecca S Rankin aged 72 years and a young 4 year old "B" Rankin - going to "Orion" Morriosn Park, Portrush, County Antrim. Country of intended futire residence was Northern Ireland.

Great information. No mention in either of those entries for the wills, about there son James or grand children -  B J and J A   ???  Is that unusual ?  The son has such an unusual fist name but nothing seems to show in Canadian records that we can see.  :-\

The two entries are from the Probate Books and since probate was granted there would have been Wills. The actual wills and paperwork will be in the archives in Belfast (PRONI).

If you want to PM me the full names of grandchildren I'll have a look at some local records (I'm only a few miles from Portrush).

Might mean nothing - Violet Rankin - St George Street - Canada Voters List 1963 was described as a dietician - this is also the one which shows James Leslie Rankin (expeditor)  ???

Miss Violet Best (dietitian) appears on Canada Voters Lists at St George Street in 1949. (Spadina District)

There is a family tree on familysearch that you might want to look at...

It says

Ellen Jane Dickson Boothroyd (1847-1885), daughter of James Dickson and Agnes Finlayson
Charlotte Amanda Grainger (1854-1908) - second wife of Benjamin Boothroyd

The tree lists the Boothroyd children and their spouses
John Andrew Boothroyd (1868-1922) m Bertha Mae Alexander
William Allen Boothroyd (1868-1937) m Ruby Leila Whitcroft
Millicent Pollock Boothroyd (1873-1892)
George Archibald Boothroyd (1877-1947) m Adah Burel Heald Angell
Agnes Jane Boothroyd (1882-1933) m Ernest Fancy Best (your great grandparents)
Minnie Pearl Boothroyd (1885-1919) m Herbert Roy Miller

You might want to have a look at this tree - and perhaps research these Boothroyds.  There could be lots of relatives here :) :)

Found a little note in a Texas newspaper, December 1946, about a ship arriving, carrying people who had been working for UNRRA in Germany.  One of the people mentioned was Garnet Royd Best.  He was said to be on his way home to Toronto.

So, Garnet was a teacher in 1935 (voters list that Sandra found), then worked for UNRRA after the war.
