Title: Eva Susan Reynolds - need some help
Post by: beckwar on Saturday 17 March 18 16:09 GMT (UK)
Hi, I've been having trouble finding information for an Eva Susan Reynolds (born 1862) prior to her marriage to Walter Martin in Marylebone in 1887. Fathers name John William Reynolds who is a law stationer on her marriage cert. She was living at 38 George Street, St. Marylebone at time of marriage. I can find her on census records from 1891 living with her husband and their offspring (winnifred, Alan, Marjorie, Charles & Frederic) at a few different addresses all in Essex. I think her husband died in 1906, She died in 1927. Census records say she was born in London and the 1911 census says in Forest Gate.

Can anyone help me find her pre 1887 and work out where she was born and who her mother is? Any suggestions where to look much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is no birth registration on freebmd - the only Eva Susan born in the London area was surname Roberts 1863 Bermondsey and her mothers maiden name was Peck

Maybe Reynolds was a step fathers name she used.

Have you looked for a John William Reynolds law stationer on census?

I have a subscription on ancestry website and I have never been able to find a birth record for her. Never thought about john william reynolds possibly being a step father. It's been a while since I looked into this but I did try looking for john william on the census and couldn't find him, also tried looking at some directories for him as a law stationer but didn't manage to find anything

Is her maiden name Reynolds on the births of all her children?

Certainly is on the first two Winifred and Allan so that certainly seems to be the surname she used.

The closest I could find was this:
1871 in Kent

John Reynolds   40 Police Sergeant
Susan Reynolds   44
John Henry Reynolds   12
Walter G Reynolds   10
Susan A Reynolds   8

Unlikely though

I have searched Eva Susan/Susan Eva with birth year, no surname and Father John and come up empty  ::)

Milliepede I have the birth certificates for Allan, Frederic and Charles and they all say maiden name Reynolds.

Thanks Carol, I came across that John Reynolds police sergeant myself and wondered but like you decided it was unlikely.

This one (baptised Susan Ann) can be ruled out - she is still with her widowed mother (in Ramsgate) in 1891.

Witnesses to the 1 Jan 1887 marriage are William J. Aston and E.A. Wright - have they been traced?

I did say it was unlikely. But you just never know.

Yes.  That John (the father) was a shoemaker though, so not an obvious match on occupation.

I think they were the John Reynolds and Susannah Cumley who married West Ham Dec qtr 1850.
