Title: William Austin Jenkins
Post by: JenkinsFamilyHistory on Sunday 18 March 18 01:29 GMT (UK)
Hi, I'm hoping to get some help to maybe solve another major family mystery for me.

My Grandfather Trevor Henry Thomas Jenkins (1934- died 1986 in Ontario, Canada) had a brother named David Austin Jenkins (1927-1985 I think) who received an OBE at some point in his life and a sister named Ann Margaret Jenkins(Born 1931) who married Terence Bateman(Born 1926) and they had a son, Mark Bateman.
My Great Grandparents were William Austin Jenkins, who was a miner near Kent I think, and his wife was Margaret Mildred Thomas (1901-1966). Margaret and William were married in Bridgend, Glamorgan and I believe Margaret was born there. I also believe William had two sisters, Stella and Phyllis Jenkins.

This unfortunately is all of the information I know regarding this entire part of my history.
I'm curious to find any information about William and Margaret and to be quite honest anything else anyone may be able to find regarding David receiving an OBE.

Thank you in advance for all of your help and I look forward to your replies!

Two possible death certs too

Jenkins,  William A    Age 48    Aylesbury   Vol 6a p292
 Dec 1949
Jenkins,    William A    Age 53    North Bucks.Vol 6a p391

Details of the above have already been posted (see reply 7)  :)

If Harry & Annie Thomas are the correct parents for Margaret Matilda Thomas born c1901
and she’s not with them on the latest census (see reply 8)
here’s a possibility for Margaret for you to look into  - no middle name given

I believe the John Jenkins referenced (1911 living at 79 Coity Road, Bridgend) is my great-great grandfather.  Born around 1870, appearing in Wales census in 1871, 1881.  Coming to USA sometime between 1881 and returning to Wales before 1900.  Married with wife and kids in USA.  Returned to Wales; second wife and kids in Wales.  William Austin Jenkins would be his first from his second wife (Margaret) Would love to prove my hunch and help.  Jim  jim.smith@bearcreekschool.com

Hi Jim,
That's really incredible to hear. My father often told me that he had relatives in the US.
What sort of information have you gathered so far?
Can you tell me the name of the woman he married and in which state?
I'm sorry to bombard you with questions I'm just very excited.
Thanks so much in advance!

I believe my John Jenkins was born in Kenfig Hills around 1870-1874 and came to the United States in the mid 1800s.  He would have married Patience Bubble and had 3-5 children here in the USA.  Walter Jenkins, William Jenkins, Nelena Jenkins, and George Jenkins.  I believe he returned to Wales between 1897 and 1900.  I believe John's parents were William Jenkins and Margaret Morgans.  I know he had a brother Thomas, a brother Evan, and a sister Mary, among others.  I also believe he had an Uncle Rees Jenkins and an Uncle Evan Jenkins.  I believe Rees was a famous miner who lived in South Wales.

1910 US census Patience has remarried John E Williams, her three children

Do you have John Jenkins on any UK censuses with his parents & siblings Thomas, Evan & Mary?
If so, can you give the reference numbers please

I have John Jenkins arriving in the Port of New York on the ship Alsatia on December 16, 1881 at the age of 9.  He arrived with Mary, his mother age 40; David his brother Age 18, Mary his sister, Age 14, Edward his brother Age 11, Evan his brother Age 4, Thomas his brother Age 5, and Elizabeth, his sister, who was an infant.  His father William Jenkins did not travel with the family and did not appear on the ship manifest.  I have proven that this family on the manifest is definitely my ancestors.

I have found my Jenkins Family in the 1881 Census for Wales.  It appears the census was taken earlier in the year, before they left for the USA.  Civil Parish Llantrisant, Rural Sanitary District of Pontypridd.  Looks like #141 appears on the top, Page 37.  No. 153 Gilfach Goch.  William Jenkins, head, Age 43, Coal Miner born in Neath.  Margaret Jenkins, Wife, Age 37, born in Kenfig Hill.  Son David Jenkins Age 19, Coal Miner, born in Kenfig Hill, Daughter Mary Jenkins Age 16, Servant, born in Kenfig Hill, Son Edward, Age 15, Coal Miner, born in Kenfig Hill; Son John Jenkins, Age 13, Coal Miner, born in Kenfig Hill; Son Evan Jenkins, Age 9, Scholar born in Kenfig Hill; Thomas Jenkins, Age 8, Scholar born in Kenfig Hill; Elizabeth Jenkins, Age 2 Weeks, born in Gilfach Goch.

It appears John's father arrived in the USA a few months earlier than the rest of the family in 1881.
Title: Re: William Austin Jenkins
Post by: JimSmithSearchingJenkins on Tuesday 11 February 20 17:34 GMT (UK)
I can find no record of John Returning to Wales.  I have been able to narrow down his departure based on when his children here in the USA were born and when his wife Patience was found living without John.  There is no documented marriage license for John and Patience.

Patience and John had at least four children: George, William, Walter and Nelena.  The United States Census for 1900 infers that Patience Jenkins had five children, three of whom are living (William, Walter and Nelena).  It appears a fifth child was born and died prior to 1900.

Based upon information passed down by family members and based on information available, it appears John Jenkins returned to Wales sometime between 1897 and 1900.  The obituary for his brother Evan W. Jenkins on July 19, 1901 indicates John Jenkins is a resident of Wales. Family lore has John remarrying upon returning to Wales and rearing additional children.

The United States Census for 1900 shows Patience Jenkins residing children William, Nelina and Walter Jenkins along with Holliday (Huldah) Walker and Bob Walker, her son, in Miners Mills, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.  It is believed Huldah Walker is Patience’s grandmother.

I do have detailed information on some of John's siblings if that is helpful.
