Title: What happened to the McCartneys?
Post by: Forfarian on Sunday 18 March 18 11:26 GMT (UK)
Alexander McCartney was born in Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1842/1843. On 2 July 1875 he married Margaret Burgess, born Keith, Banffshire. They had a son William McCartney, born 6 April 1876, and a daughter Marion Baird McCartney, born 1 March 1879.

They emigrated in 1880. I don't know when Alexander travelled, but Margaret, William and Marion arrived at New York aboard the SS Bolivia on 21 September 1880.

A daughter Margaret Burgess McCartney was born in New York on 18 June 1888, and a son Alexander Burgess McCartney was born there on 11 July 1890.

Apart from that, and a report of an American Marion McCartney visiting Keith almost half a century ago, I have found no further traces of them.

I have looked in the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 US census, and the 1892 NY census, for them, but so far without success.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Gosh, that's stunning! Thank you so much.

I don't understand why I failed to find them in all those censuses - I was searching on FamilySearch, so they should have come up.

Sadly the death of an infant - Robert and Irene MaCartney had a son Donald 18 May 1922 - buried 19 May 1922 Woodlawn Cemetery. Wonder if other Macartney could be buried in the same location  ???
Food for thought for now anyway.

California Deaths index has Marian B Macartney, born 1 March 1879, died 29 December 1974, San Mateo, California.

That must be the one whose visit to Keith was mentioned to me in about 1984 - my informant remembered the visit 'a number of years ago' but couldn't be more precise.

I wonder what happened to Charles Elmer Rosefelt and why Marion listed herself as single in the 1930 and 1940 censuses?

I added more details for Charles on reply 5 - he was 51 years old so perhaps he passed away.  I didn't find any record earlier.

Yes, I noted that, thank you. Also that it was his second marriage. I have saved the images of his index card and Marion's. But I can't find him in any census at all, before or after.

The curious thing is that in both 1930 and 1940, when you'd expect her to call herself Marion Rosefelt, widow, she is calling herself Marion Macartney, single.

Yes, that's it. Given the myriad variants that do present themselves when I search for McCartney, it is rather surprising that Macartney doesn't come up as a result, because it would have exactly the same Soundex value. I can just about understand why McCarterney wouldn't appear :)

Re Marion's husband, I think the name is Rosenfelt, not Rosefelt. He is in the 1920 census in Jersey City with two adult children Lucille and Charles. The occupation (publisher, patterns) ties in to the business incorporation reference I posted earlier.   https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRXF-91X?i=10&cc=1488411

A boarder in Jersey City in 1930 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRCD-8TW?i=56&cc=1810731
