cathrine rooney 1849 mother Margaret Goulding father Daniel rooney 1816 Ireland can anyone tell me why cathrine was on a ship the mary pleasant from Liverpool to Philadelphia usa age 9 occupation labourer arrival date 7 sep 1849 I know she came back when she was about 18 and went to live in durham near her mother her father died in the poor house while she was on the ship I was also wondering where her mother was cathrine being her only child

Hello,
You have Catherine Rooney, 1849 mother Margaret Goulding and father Daniel Rooney, 1816, Ireland.
Then you have Catherine aged 9 yrs onboard in 1849 ???
One of the dates is wrong, I assume.
Was that Catherine alone?
How do you know it is the same person?
She returned to live near her mother. Do you have her in censuses?
Daniel died when she was on the ship- was that 1849?
Was. Catherine born in Ireland or England?
Sorry, it is all questions but hopefully we can help.

Is this Catherine?
Catherine Rooney mmn Golding
Birth 1842 March quarter Wigan Vol 21 Pg 826

Ancestry does not show the original image for Catherine on board the Mary Pleasant. It shows 91 passengers on the same ship - no-one else with a surname Rooney.
She is described as a labourer, which made me wonder if the age had been transcribed incorrectly - but a 2 year old is also a labourer, and I think all the passengers are - though I have not clicked on every name.
The ancestry information is from here:
'Philadelphia, Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1800-1850'
so if direct access is available the original may be accessible.
Added:
Yes, on IGI.

I know that ages are often wrong but Catherine would only be 7 yrs old in 1849.
I just wonder what other evidence there is that this is her.
I can’t see any other though.
There is a Mary Born 1847 but she died soon after birth. Do you have Mother Margaret in 1851?
-
Tree on Ancestry has Catherine marrying James Sewell on 16th December 1861 in Durham.
Also that Daniel Rooney died in 1852 in Liverpool.
Not yet checked any of that.
-
I can see 2 deaths for Daniel Rooney in Liverpool in 1852, one age 0 and one age 33.
-
Catherine Sewell in 1881, 1891 and 1901, born Wigan according to the censuses.
Born 1843 in Durham in 1871.
Appears to be lodging with the Hardy family in Durham in 1861, born Wigan.

Hello again,
I am sorry but your message isn’t very clear.
You have:
1842 Catherine’s birth certificate with parents Daniel Rooney and Margaret Goulding. Wigan
1849 Catherine’s emigration to US aged 9 yrs
1852 Daniel Rooney death in Liverpool Workhouse
1861 Catherine in Durham - living at the same address but different household to James Sewell
1861 Catherine’s marriage to J S
I don’t understand your reference to mother Margaret.
Is this right?
She married McManus but you haven’t got the marriage.
You haven't got Margaret in any census.
I just wonder how do you know that the death of Daniel is your ancestor? He should be in 1851 census - do you have him there?
As I wrote before, how do you know that it is the same Catherine who emigrated?
It is confusing.

Just found your earlier thread re Margaret and Catherine with a bit more information
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714116.
-
Just a couple of things which may be important, after reading your other thread and finding the McManus family.
There is this birth
1845 June quarter, Wigan
Patrick Rouen mmn Goulding
This is quite likely to be Patrick as there is that birth and death of Mary Rooney mmn Goulding in 1847, Wigan.
Newspaper snippet
February 1862 Durham County Advertister
Patrick Rooney of Gilesgate Moor charged by his mother Margaret McManus with assaulting her.
-
I noticed this Catherine in Wigan in 1851 2199/338/46
Catherine Goulding, 7yrs abt 1844. She is lodging at a house and another lodger is Patrick Goulding, 24 yrs.
There is nothing else to go on. I have tried to cross check her with others.
-
oh thank you all very much for all that information I was wondering about Patrick born in Manchester I know he was durham he was there aged 4 after that he must have died, I,ll
sorry I have not replied sooner I have been in Singapore
-
no I don't have the boys birth certificates
-
I was asking re the certificates as I couldn’t find a Manchester birth but then found Patrick’s.
I am not sure but I think I did see Patrick in later censuses but haven’t checked.
The newspaper articles show the difficulties the family had with drunkenness and assaults.
1859
Catherine Rooney - hard labour for 6 weeks for assaulting her mother. Her defence was that Margaret McManus was always drunk and starved the children.
1860
Assaults by Catherine, 17 yrs old, on her mother and a sibling.
1862
Patrick Rooney assaults his mother - prison for one month
