Post by: Mayfly663 on Wednesday 21 March 18 13:08 GMT (UK)
Looking for info on John Dowlman born around 1850 in Fulstow Lincs. He married Mary Ann Little whose father was the miller at Waltham Windmill nr Grimsby.

I can't seem to find any details about his parents or beyond.

Any info - pointers welcome.

Thanks Suz, thats helpful not sure why I didn't find them in the 1901 census.

Yep that's the family. I did get the YOB incorrect.  Florrie & Minnie were twins but so I'm not sure of their paternity. I have their birth certificates and no father is named. It's some what of a mystery as they sometimes called themselves Dowlman and other times Little.

Who is their mother?   Looks like they wee illegitmate. Was mother related to the Dowlmans, or did they just take them in (sort of fostering) and then they just brought them up?

Looks like the Dowlmans brought them up, so that is why they use that name sometimes, whereas they started life with the surname Little.

Mary Ann Little was their mother.
In the 1891 census they are called Little age 1 and John is aged 10. In the 1901 census they called Dowlman and John is down as their father aged 20, he was 10 yrs younger than Mary Ann.

I can only assume at this point that they were lodgers in 1891 and Mary Ann married the son.
Florrie was my grandmother but she died in 1930. Minnie her twin moved into the family home and brought up my mother and her 4 sisters.

John is not listed as their father in 1901.  They are recorded as grandchildren of the head of the house. That's why I asked their mothers name - in case they were children of another child of Thomas Dowlman.
But, putting it all together, it does look as if they were illegitimate children of Mary Little. She then married John Dowlman, and he took on the children.

In 1901 John is 29 and 1891 he is 20

Can you find Mary A in 1891?
John would have been old enough to be the father of Minnie &  Florrie - but maybe  considered too young to marry - his parents seemed to acknowledge the children as Grandchildren once John and mary A were married

Thank you Suz. I read the 1891 transcript were it said he was 10 I can see now reading the census itself it does say 20. You could well be correct as as I know in general, being pregnant before marriage at that time wasn't frowned upon as such but giving birth out of wedlock certainly was.

I think my brain is addled today!

I never have found Mary A in 1891 but my interest has certainly been renewed today - thanks again.

My latest copy of my tree was dumped yesterday when my usb drive went kaput!  I do have a back up but can't seem to find my working copy of notes so need to search my old pc.

I know the name Elizabeth Jacklyn rings a bell.

Thank you so much for your efforts this has helped me greatly.
