Title: Louisa Paul b Q2 1874 Battersea, London m Canada
Post by: Cockneyrebel on Thursday 22 March 18 09:20 GMT (UK)
The above, daughter of David Paul and Eliza nee Healey apparently emigrated to Canada where she m  John Minns 24 Apr 1895 at  Uxbridge, Ontario/ After that I can find no record of her. When they married they were both under age, she 20 and he 19 and both lived at Stouffville. John was the son of George and Mary and seems to appear on the 1901 census as single with them in Toronto ?

Well done, Christine.  By 1906, he is remarried with a young child (not Ethel), and living in Alberta. By 1911, he is in British Columbia.

The child died 16 February 1896, aged 3 months, in Belleville. Father John was the informant. Say he is a butcher by trade.

There's an online tree that indicates the maiden name might be Poll or Paul.  The marriage of her parents spells the name as Poll.

Thank you very much for your research about John and Ethel. Do you think that Louisa remarried too as it seems strange that there is no death record for her?

They likely went their separate ways.  She was pregnant when they got married, and after the baby died, perhaps thought better of being married.  That's why I wondered if you had her actual birthdate, since that would  help narrowing her down.

Looks like John Minns remarried

Ontario births has him born on Feb 17 1876  in Sandford, Scott Twp.   Parents George Minns and May Carruthers (family search transcriptions says Ramuthan)

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-Y3SW-TLR

The marriage record says John Minns was born in Sandford....

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-Y39B-8JM?i=1232&cc=1784216

John Minns born 17 Feb 1876 died in New Westminster BC on 17 Nov 1945.  Family search says his parents were George Minns and Mary Carruthers.  Wife was Mary Elizabeth Lee

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLLQ-BP8

This is possibly John and Mary in 1911 in New Westminster.  There is a daughter Marjorie, born in Alberta in 1906

If I get a chance, I will check the Uxbridge library to see if there is a Minns family file.

Looks good keyboard :)

I think this is Mary Elizabeth Minns (nee Lee) ... death in Port Coquitlam B.C. Feb 2 1941.

It would be interesting to find out where John Minns and Mary Elizabeth Lee were married... Did he say he was a bachelor??

:)  The only problem is that David Paul/Poll occ Boot/Shoemaker b Norwich seems to "Reappear" 1901/1911 and an Ancestry tree gives him in Workhouse for many years?

When Sophia Paul married Charles Leopold Escott 9th March 1891 her father David Paul occ Boot maker was deceased?

No marriage registration in Ontario.  Child born in Alberta.  Perhaps married there.

My research us about the Healey family and Louisa is one of the children of Eliza who m David Paul or Poll. Theirs is a strange history and has appeared on here in the London, England forum as Eliza Healey. Looking at the various UK censuses and workhouse records, it seems to me that Eliza separated from David and claimed to be a widow; I think she may have passed away  in 1902 but he lived to be 85 and d 30 Nov 1918 in the workhouse in Greenwich. It seems strange to me that Louisa was the only one that was 'sent' to Canada. Although in hindsight her 2 brothers Edward and Henry who were b  1877 and 1879 are missing from the UK after 1881 census?
I'm very interested to know why there are no records about Louisa after her marriage to John Minns, surely there should be a record in Canada of her 2nd marriage or passing considering her age? I don't know her exact dob as there is no record online for her other than Q2 1874 which means Apr-June or maybe earlier in the year.

I e-mailed a person with access to the home child records regarding Louisa and the reply was:
I do have a little information for you about what happened to Louisa after she arrived in Canada, which was extracted from the 1890 Annual Report of Miss Rye’s Emigration Home for Destitute Little Girls (located at Peckham, South London) viz

Entry No 43 “L.P., aged 13, father dead, mother dangerously ill. To Mr S.J.H., Farmer, Charing Cross, Ontario. Servant. If good and trustworthy, treated as one of the family”
Unfortunately, as you may know, the records for Miss Rye’s children are lost and believed to have been destroyed following Miss Rye’s retirement in 1896 – it might be worth trying to find “Mr S.J.H.”, occupation Farmer, in the 1891 Ontario Census and see if Louisa was still with him then.

I am afraid that I am not able to help you with the fate of her brothers Edward & Henry James, other than to say that I could not find either of them listed in the Home Children Database, on the Library & Archives of Canada website.
