Title: One more surname needed for six gen chart (In Burton)
Post by: mike gordon on Thursday 22 March 18 12:53 GMT (UK)
My six generation chart needs only one more surname (for the Mary below) to be complete.

I have :-
George Hyland b c1827 Staplehurst, Kent. Wife Ann Burton bap 24 June 1827 Maidstone, Kent.
Married 23 May 1847 Boughton Monchelsea, Kent.

Ann's father given as Thomas Burton, mother Mary (nee ?) on baptism record.

From 1861 census I have - (If I have the right one?)
Thomas Burton b c1789 St Dunstans, Middlesex.
Mary ? b c1800 Wadhurst, Sussex.

Cannot find then in the 1841 or 1851 census, nor can I find a marriage for Thomas and Mary.

As ussual, any help very much appreciated.

Are there other children on the 1861? One of the best things you can hope for is that they might have had a child after Sept 1837, although you'd still have to prove that they are the same family as yours.

No, Thomas is then in his seventies, he and Mary appear to be lodging with his brother.

Hello,

The transcription, no image, for Ann’s baptism has mother as Mercy, if it is the right one.
This would fit with the daughter of George and Ann - again if it is the correct couple  :-\

Not sure which one you have there - George and Ann had a child Mercy 1848.
I have attached the bap cert that I have.

Yes that's the right one, so adds 1851 to what I have.
Thanks

I mean the transcription for Anne’s baptism 1827. From Ancestry, England Births and Christenings,

Do you think the couple you have in censuses could be Barton and not Burton?

Ah! That's a different transcription to the one I have (from The Genealogist) which gives Mary as mother. Mercy would of course fit with a grandaughter being Mercy.

Looking closely at the images, I think it is Burton transcribed as Barton. In some it's clearly Burton.
The marriage for George Hyland gives Ann Burton.
But above that, I'm not certain.

What is Thomas’ occupation on Anne’s marriage certificate?
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

The Thomas you have in the censuses was a Tailor.
The marriage certificate should give Ann’s father’s occupation if he was alive.
You would at least know if you were on the right track.

That clearly has to be my next step, I have to thank you very much for your input and effort today even if we haven't come to a positive conclusion, it has served to clarify one or two points.
All the best
