Title: Picnic Anyone? Clean-up, brighten and date please NSW Australia
Post by: aus*jen on Saturday 24 March 18 07:06 GMT (UK)
Would appreciate a clean-up, brighten and date for this photo in an old family album.
Reverse asks "do you recognise anyone in this group?"  no names given, could be family or friends
possibly NSW Australia.  Love the teapot, all ready to be blackened some more over an open fire.

Thankyou,
Jen.

Certainly Edwardian. I don't think later than about 1908 so 1905 +/- 2.

Tommy, thankyou for the enhancement and black and white version of the photo.  It is a vast
improvement and great to be able to see the detail on the dresses and hats.  Love the sharp,
straight borders as well.

Yvonne, thankyou for your restoration of the pic.  I love the soft sepia tone which gives it an old world feel.  All the finery on the ladies is a sharp contrast to the picnic shed in the midst of the Australian
bush.

Two ladies there a bit camera shy under their huge 'fluffy/veily' hats, Jen.

A wonderful photo!  It made me look up again that beloved classic of Australian literature, "The Pic-Nic Party" by my first cousin four times removed, Samuel Hawker Banks.

I have saved this bigger but will post it this size.

I wonder if it might be a church picnic - well they brought the clergy anyway - and the dog!

And what has the man seated second from right got on his hand - I can't see but it looks as if he has drawn a monkey's face on the back of his hand!   :-\ ;D ;D  Interesting that they are all much of an age it would seem.

Another lovely photo Jen.

Yes, Erato it reminds me of that classic Aust. story too.  For some reason your link did not work,
and showed an error message.

Wiggy, Thankyou for your wonderful restoration, very crisp and sharp with great depth. ;D You have
removed the 'veil' covering the original and all the details are revealed.  Yes I did notice the ladies
hiding behind their fluffy hats.  Agree it could be a church picnic, love the helmet on the minister.
Also noticed the 'monkey face' on the hand of the man in the front row behind the teapot.  I think he has a tea-towel/cloth in his hands because he has just lifted a very hot teapot off the fire for
use as 'special effect' or prop for the photo.  Maybe the monkey face is on the tea towel - curious :o
Also love the umbrella hanging on the shed just in case of rain.  So much in this photo to enjoy.  The black border looks good.

I had to stay up late tonight, waiting for family, so took this opportunity to have a go at colouring your beautiful photo.
I thought maybe a church outing too, all the ladies competing to see who is wearing the fanciest outing.. I also love the little dog.

When I asked for a 'brighten' Trishanne I didn't expect anything like your coloured version, what a
delightful result. ;D  Thankyou for all the hard work you have put into colouring this photo.

Thankyou for the second link Erato.  Like you I have a family interest in Aust. literature.  My 3rd.
cousin married Tom Pearce who was 'Mine Host' in Jeannie Gunn's story 'We of the Never Never'
set in the Northern Territory.  There are many references to Tom Pearce and Elsey Station on Google.

Jen.

Hi Carol, beautiful restore! I'm going to re-think my standard 'restore process' because mine loses the lovely creamy whites that you retained. These add so much to the quality of the photo.

Hi Mike,  Thankyou for your great restoration of the photo, love the brightness and contrast
and the detail.  I especially like the fact that you have retained the rays of sunshine from the right
of the picture slanting across the people in the front.  I am indeed fortunate to have so many great
restorations of the pic.

Jen.

Hello Carol,  I love everything about your wonderful restoration of the photo especially the warmth
of the sepia tones.  These create a lovely contrast and bring out the detail of the costumes and hats
The misty effect around the perimeter of the photo is a lovely touch and gives focus to the group.
Thankyou for your time and expertise in restoring the photo. ;D ;D

Regards,
Jen.

p.s.  Wiggy has mentioned to me that there is 'something' in the photo on the right of the lady with
the glasses.  Looks like a small face to me, could it be a baby (looking from the side) and
wearing a bonnet?  Can be seen in the colour version by Trishanne.

Hi Jen

I had a go atthis over the weekend but got side tracked.  You've had some lovely restores but, as I'd done them,  here are my efforts - a straight B & W and a tinted one (toner said it was called Retro!)

Can't get them both on together- here's Retro

I think the bit by the lady with specs might be some foliage from the background - not sure though  :-\

Gadget

Added - had another look at the area by the lady and it does look closer than background. Also, is the lady to the left sitting on something  :-\

You're very welcome, Jen, and thanks for the compliment. Yes, you're fortunate to get different high-quality restorations. Speaking just for myself, what inspires me most to work on photos is that they are just great photos (whatever the date/quality). This is definately one of them!

Mike

Hi Gadget,  Apologies for the delay in replying, have had some internet issues, I'm using the
local library to reply.

Thankyou so much for your 2 great restorations of the photo, you have achieved such clarity and
crispness and revealed every detail ;D Have just noticed that the man on the extreme left in spite of
his dapper appearance and pose has very scuffed shoes  :D and so have the 2 ladies next to him.  It
appears to be very dusty and rocky underfoot.

Thankyou also for the enlargement of the area near the lady in specs. it could be a baby, not sure
though.  The lady to the left does have an awkward pose, maybe she is sitting on a table.

I love both of your restorations but the 'retro' is my favourite, it reminds me of the sepia photos
that were popular before colour photography.  My Mum used to colour sepia photos with oils, she
coloured the photo I use as my avatar.  I appreciate your time and expertise.

Regards,
Jen.

I  enjoyed doing it, Jen.

I do hope your internet gets sorted for you. Is it still the result of the fallen  fallen branch?
