Any information appreciated. Believed to have been born around 1879 to Mary Ann Gregson, father possibly John Hill aka (Badger). I have a reference to her not attending infant school in Launceston in 1887. My only other reference is to her having a bar room brawl in the Lord Nelson Public House in Hobart in May 1895, stated age of 16 years.

In case you don't have this, there was a free convict John Badger to Melbourne in 1854 ( ref Tasmanian Archives) A...y.com.au has numerous entries for Mary Ann Gregson in Launceston for petty crime.

Thank you both so much for the information. Amazing what "fresh" eyes can see.
This has given me lots to work with. I will do another post about Harriett's mother soon as I still cannot find a death record for her.

Yes, a very violent relationship since around 1885.

I see that there are articles online about a database for Queenstown burials but I cannot see it on the council's website.

Maybe give them a call.

Can you describe your purpose - are you researching the fate of Mary Ann HILL.........the fate of her daughter Harriet LAURIE nee HILL m. 1897...........origins of mother Mary Ann HILL........so we know where to go with this.
And what information you already have.

The only information I now need thanks to the above is the death date and place of Harriett's mother.
Her name was Mary Ann Gregson born 1855. She married a John Sheen (Sheahy) and lived with John Hill aka Badger for many years in a very violent relationship.
She has a long police record and I have all of these details.
My last evidence of her is in January 1898 living in Queenstown TAS.
She went under the name of Gregson or Hill and very occasionally Sheen

I think this refers to the mother's sister, Alice Gregson. The siblings of Mary Ann that I've seen mentioned are noted in this article (Alice, Francis, John)

I can see that Mary Ann GREGSON, being associated with John HILL, would use that HILL family name. Children of Mary Ann GREGSON might also use the HILL family name.
I might not expect to see Alice, sibling of Mary Ann GREGSON, also use the HILL family name?
Tabster, can you name the children that you have identified as being born to Mary Ann GREGSON
Is Alice GREGSON (Minnie HILL) at 1913, a daughter of Mary Ann GREGSON?

Correct Matthew, Alice and Mary Ann were sisters and the Advocate had merged 2 people into the one item, with the Examiner being correct.
Mary definitely had the one child Harriett. In one article it mentions her in court with 2 lively infants but I feel that one of these may have been Alice's son Walter. I can find no other references to further children.
