Title: Norfolk ancestors
Post by: Heleninthesun on Sunday 25 March 18 11:48 BST (UK)
I've got stuck on ancestors in Norfolk and am looking for information about
Mary Anne Eke - possibly Ike
Birth 1782 • Hackford next Reepham, Norfolk, England
Death Unknown
I believe her married name was Jolly, I'm more interested in her parents at this point but anything you can tell me would be fantastic.
TIA
Helen

Welcome to rootschat

Mary's marriage banns to William Jolley (1797) and baptisms of her children in Deopham have her name as just Mary Eke.

There is a marriage of a James Jolly in 1825 in Deopham to Elizabeth Crisp. The witnesses were George Eke and Elizabeth Eke. Might be part of same family.

The only George Eke I can find also has parents Joseph and Mary so could be James Jolly's uncle

Looks like this George Eke married Jemima Daniels at Wymondham and lived at great Ellingham in 1841 and 1851

There's a will of a Joseph Eke of Boro Lane, London - probate 6 Nov 1834, mentions wife Mary and son Joseph and some property in Deopham the occupation of William Jolly farmer. Could be Joseph (1780) - Mary's brother.

Joseph Eke of Bow Lane (not Boro - will is hard to read) Cheapside buried Bunhill Fields 10 aug 1834. age 67, so birth approx 1767.
From Trish's list I had assumed Joseph 1767 died and that was why there was a replacement Joseph in 1780, unless informant of death got his age very wrong ???

Many thanks for all the replies,  it gives me something to work with. Maybe a change from Ancestry is required,  broaden my horizons,  you've obviously all done this before 😁

Yes I looked for Burials but couldnt find any for John/James/Joseph.
Maybe they were Bapt more than once?.
Edward 1782 is in London in 1841/1851 Census also.

There is a baptism for a Joseph Eke son of Isaac and Mary at East Dereham in 1736. The date is 22 and I think the month is September - the month is written first and has disappeared into the fold of the book, but working it out from the ones on the left hand page I think it must be September. Although E Dereham is abt 12 miles from Deopham by shortest walking route, I thought it a possibility because Joseph calls one of his sons Isaac.

Thanks,  part of my problem is that I've not been to Norfolk in 40 years and don't know where these places are, maybe a holiday is called for.

Isaac Eke (single man) was buried in Deopham on 24 May 1804 aged 39, so he must be Joseph's son b abt 1765.
