Title: Searching For the right Magnus Banks
Post by: Rosezi on Sunday 25 March 18 21:08 BST (UK)
Just realised the baptism I have for my ancestor Magnus Banks for 1759 Holm and Paplay, Orkney, is wrong as he got wed in 1773 to Margaret Simpson in Canisbay,  so he would have been about 14 when he married! The only other Magnus Banks I can find is also in Orkney born in 1720 to James Banks and Jean Corstan, not sure this is the right one either, as Magnus Banks and Mgt Simpson's first child was born in 1775. Can anyone help find another Magnus Banks?

Although it was not a common event marriage for a boy age 14 was legal until 1929.
However Magnus married in the July, the record was dated September.
So was the 1759 record a birth date or baptism, if it was birth he was only 13?

Trying to estimate from the other direction ~  have you got a baptism date for Margaret Simpson?

Margaret Simpson was born March 1759, so she was about 26, Magnus was born Sept 1759, the record is on an old parish births records, so I am assuming its a birth date. There is another Magnus Banks also from Orkney born in 1720 which I thought might fit but it would make him 55 when he fathered William and 68 when he fathered the last child, so I am not sure this is the right Magnus either!
