Title: Was she Parry or Roberts????
Post by: Marie Baker on Sunday 25 March 18 22:57 BST (UK)
Jane Parry was born on 30th Nov 1904 in Colwyn Bay ,Caernarvonshire, but as we only have a short version certificate, we have no parental names.
On her marriage cert. 1923,when she marries Alfred Owen Williams, she gives her surname as Roberts and her father as William Roberts.
In 1940 she married James George Cole as a widow.
Can anyone explain why the two surnames please.
Also throw any light on what happened to Alfred Owen Williams,
Many thanks.

I would suggest that as you know the exact date of birth that you apply for the full birth certificate which will include her parents names and their address at the time of her birth.
Don’t be too surprised to find that there is no father and the father on her marriage certificate is her step father.
Have you found her on the 1911 census ?

Hi

I think this is her birth registration:

Dec Q, 1904, Conway, 11b 468.  Mother's name is blank suggesting that she was illegitimate.

Thank you so much for your replies gadget and nesta.
This confirms what I was thinking.

Gadget, did you mean mothers or fathers name is missing? I thought maybe fathers name would be blank and that therefore Parry was her mothers surname.

On the GRO index it gives the child's name and then the mother's name. If the mother's name is left blank, it usually means that  the child is illegitimate and has taken the mother's surname, so Parry would be the mother's name.

I've been trying to find a death for Alfred but no info on his age - what does it have on the marriage cert for him?

Also found a report of an Alfred Owen Williams (1st June 1926, Lancashire Evening Post).

Alfred Owen Williams of Glascoed, Penmaenrhos and Hugh Hughes......were seen to be in distress in a small boat some distance off Penmaenrhos Point.... The two men were taken on board the motor boat in an exhausted state

I assume they survived this.

Also,  she married  James G Cole in the  Aled RD,  Q 1, 1940, so still in the Colwyn Bay area.

Have you found Jane on the 1939 register?

Only death that's showing on the North Wales BMD is :

Alfred Owen Williams, Hawarden, 1934

GRO index for this is

Alfred O Williams, age 31. Q 2, 1934, Hawarden, vol 11b, p. 270

By 1939 she was widowed , so have searched for Jane Williams, dob 30/11/1904 widowed, to no avail!

I've tried a few variations - including Cole but nothing obvious is showing.

Have you checked for her address when she married in 1940?
