Title: Looking for Arrival for John Richard BICKNELL
Post by: redmr2red on Monday 26 March 18 01:49 BST (UK)
John Richard Bicknell married Caroline Pullen in 1855 in England and had a child Alice Bicknell in 1856 born near Brighton England.  All three came to Australia and their second child George Bicknell was born in 1858 in Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria (what a coincidence).

I cannot find how, what ship or exactly how and when they arrived in Australia.

I have all the other information I need on the family, further children births, marriages and deaths, everything, BUT my "Brick Wall" is just exactly when and how did they arrived in Australia.

Thanks, Red

There is a John and Mrs Bicknell on the unclaimed letters list for Dec 1856. Could they have arrived that year or were they due to arrive Dec/Jan 1857?

Caroline’s obituary says she arrived in 1856, 4th column:

What month was Alice born in UK? Is this her birth?

Jun 1856 Bicknell Alice Petworth 2b 266

If so, it narrows their arrival to between June and December 1856.

The obit says there were 4 daughters. I can only see Ada and Ann on VICBDM and with Alice that’s 3, who is the missing one. Wondering if she was born before George in another State of Oz.

Thanks Jamjar, I also found that unclaimed letters and obit on Trove. Yes, I'm sure that is Alice, June quarter 1856 (freeBMD)

I've been searching arrivals from 1856 to 1858 the year George was born and just can't find their arrival anywhere.

I see that the missing birth is for Caroline Louisa. Her death indicates she was born in VIC, 1871.

Thanks again Jamjar, I am looking for their arrival to Australia. As I said I have all the other information about the Bicknell family.

I've looked in Assisted and Unassisted arrivals from 1856 to 1858 without success. I also tried searching on Ancestry (library version) for UK departures but that is from 1890 ..... too late for John & Caroline and baby Alice. I just can't find an arrival for them.

Is that common? Are there lots of passenger lists that have not been recorded?

Thanks again, Red

Yes, I understood what you were looking for. I was trying to ascertain where and when Caroline Jnr was born in order to discount any chance they arrived in another Australian State, in 1856.

You probably have this baptism, which shows they were still in England in early July 1856.

Alice BICKNELL
Baptised: 6 Jul 1856 at Kirdford, Sussex, England
Father:   John Richard Bicknell
Mother:   Caroline
FHL Film Number:   1041547

As the obit, which was most likely to have been written by Caroline's family has them arriving later in 1856, this is probably correct. I believe there are shipping records missing and if the Public Record office doesn't have them online, and you can't find them using versions of BRICKNELL, it might be worth contacting them to ask about known missing records.
In genealogical terms this family are known as "swimmers"
