Title: Looking for Pansy Irene Eltham (formerly Bradley)
Post by: LizzieL on Monday 26 March 18 15:54 BST (UK)
My great uncle Stanley Eltham married Pansy Irene Bradley in Bangalore, India in 1936. He was a commissioner in the Indian Police Force and they returned to the UK in 1947. Stanley died in 1950 in Didcot and administration was granted to his widow Pansy Irene Eltham. On the transcript of their marriage it says she was 40, so year of birth about 1896. The marriage was Stanley's second, I do not know if Pansy had been married before, if so Bradley would not be her maiden name.
I cannot find any trace of Pansy after 1950, please can anyone find whether she remarried and when she died and her birth surname if not Bradley. As far as I know Stanley and Pansy had no children. Stanley had one son b 1916 with his first wife.

Just after I posted I thought I'd check earlier Bradley marriages in India and I found a Pansy Irene Delamos to Patrick Vernon Gerald Bradley in 1918. Her father is Robert John Delamos, so that solves the birth surname. But still to find what happened to her after 1950

Thanks for the detail I just found a transcript of names. So the surname was De Lemos. Sounds more likely, grandma said she was "foreign".!
She seems to have lost a few years when she married my great uncle.

Can't find a marriage either, but there is a newspaper report of the death of a John Seaby in 1943 (I think he is Pansy's father - age and occupation match censuses). It says he had two daughters both living in Shepperton.

I wonder if your Pansy returned to India after the death of her husband

I wondered that, but Stanley, Stanley jnr (son from first marriage) and family left India straight after Independence. I can't find her birth in England, so I suspect she may have been born in India. I have found a De Lamos on the 1911 census who gives his birthplace as Goa (Portuguese India) so that is another possibility given the number of De Lamos with what I thought were Spanish forenames, but could quite easily be Portuguese.
Pansy would have been in England only three years when Stanley died, probably without any family of her own. Stanley's two brothers, one of his sisters, a sister in law (widow of oldest brother) and a nephew lived within 10 miles of where he and Pansy settled, but they may not have got on too well.
