Hi,
I have come into possession of a big, antique family bible once belonging to John Joseph LOUGH and would like to give it to any descendants I can find. I have undertaken the usual google searches to no avail and am hoping someone here will recognise the name. He may have been Mayor of Manly in the 1880's. Would love to hear from anyone who has any information which will help me find a relative or, indeed, from anyone who thinks they may be a relative.
Thanks,
Di

Fairly sure this John Joseph Lough is the one who drowned, as found by Jamjar, as marriage notice says he was an architect

Well, that was incredible! Such a lot of information from all of you in such a short time.
However, I just want to get his name out there and try to unearth a descendent or two to pass on his antique family bible.
How can I best do this, do you think? All suggestions appreciated.
Again - you're amazing!

You will have to wait to see if anyone connects with this search. There may not be any of the direct line, due to lack of marriages, but maybe John or May had siblings/nieces/nephews.

Just as an aside ... quite off track ...
Back in 1898 the 3 young girls attended a costume ball as "The Three Spinsters of Manly".
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article115386239
The best-carried- out costumes were those of the 'Three Spinsters of Manly,' represented by Lorna, Dore, and Meta Lough. These three tiny and winsome maids were dressed alike in long dove
-coloured dresses ,crinoline, mittens, tight fitting bodices with white fichus, and dove satin
bonnets with feathers and roses. They looked the type of spinster that Dickens would love to portray; the only thing that did not keep up the character was the roguish face peeping out of each bonnet.

What is written in the bible that could identify him as either of the John Joseph Loughs? Is there a mention of him as mayor? There's a chance that it belonged to the architect who drowned or someone else! :)

On the UK 1901 census Vera is with the two ladies mentioned in the Trove notice.
What is the connection that makes her their 1/2 sister?
On the 1911 census she is down as Marion's sister-in-law.

I'm beginning to think he was re-incarnated. There is John Joseph the architect mentioned in 1890 as being appointed as a trustee, 2nd last column:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3517487
I believe there is only one John Joseph Lough and that he didn’t drown. The news article headline asks whether he drowned and the listing in the death notices could have been made by a clerk based on the news article. I could be mistaken of course.

So, only one man, but he married May Gertrude later the same year, 1884, that Eliza Victoria died, then "drowned" in 1886 (but no official death record) and reappeared later ???
-
Marrying the same year not unusual and especially if he had 3 young girls to raise, assuming he had the two Thomson girls and Vera.
He was only Mayor for a very short time: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ltt/

John Joseph Lough is in my tree. Ancestry indicates 2nd cousin 3x removed. I'm not currently in touch with anyone closer, but will have a look through some of contacts and emails for someone. Cheers
