I wonder if there was another couple married with those surnames and they got the fathers mixed up?

You could check for any other marriages registered same place same time just in case otherwise I agree it isn't what you would expect to see.  Unless they were both stepfathers  :-\

Surprisingly on Free BMD for Sep 1858 Ashton is this

William Bretnell
John Evans
Amelia Pollitt
Elizabeth Taylor

so presumably the other couple have the wrong fathers too.  Maybe a call to GRO to explain and hopefully they can tell you the right fathers!

if the certificate you have been sent is a copy not a scan of the original I would ask the GRO to return your fee or at least send you the correct certificate

Another approach is to forget about GRO and go to the local record which is at Tameside Register Office:  CE4/13/162

The marriage was at St. Michael's, Ashton under Lyne.  The cheshirebmd.org.uk index has Elizabeth, not Elisabeth.

The register should be on film at Tameside Local Studies at Ashton library. I can check for you on Tuesday.

The register reads
Ashton under Lyne Parish Church
26th September 1858
John Evans
Full Age
Bachelor
Abode Ashton
Miner
Father Thomas Evans
Miner

and

Elizabeth Taylor
Full Age
Spinster
Abode Ashton
Father Joseph Taylor
Miner

Witness Thomas Newton- as he witnessed several marriages, he was probably a parish official
James Newton

If you would like a copy of the register entry, please message me an email address.
